Today in Christmas spirit my garage door stopped about 2/3 of the way down and went back up. Trying to Get it to go back down it just clicks when I press the button on the unit or remote. The red light on the unit isn’t flashing (which it does when the beam is broken).
I manually wound it down and seems it will go up but not down. What’s that all about?
Also a related question is can the “key” of the unit be changed so that for example if you move house and the owner kept a remote they can’t get in.
Do you have an anti crush sensor near the bottom of the door. On ours if the batteries in that go flat or you take them out it won't go past a certain point as its a built in safety measure.
Anti crush as in beam that goes across and hits a reflector? Yes I’ve got one of those. It seems to be operating in some way(I can see a red light when I put something in front of it) not sure if it has a battery. Also when I obstruct it the light on the unit flashes and steady when I don’t which seems normal... logically seems as if that is in some way the cause of the problem though.
The battery for the anti crush sensor may be in a plastic unit at the bottom of the curtain on the right hand side (looking from the inside) they are a stupid size on mine -

Good luck!
Same advice from me, 3.6v lithium battery has probably died. It's the one that detects if the door physically hits something, not the beam of light across the door opening.
Thats the one I mean. Just changed them in ours.
Don't think the sensor would stop a manual wound down? It wouldn't on mine but would stop auto operation. Sounds like a mechanical fault of some sort if door will not go down.
Don’t think the sensor would stop a manual wound down?
I read it that he wound the door down manually, and then it goes up ok with the motor, but still don't go down on the motor.
Yup I can wind it down manually, thankfully!
I don’t think I have an anti crush, just have the beam that is about a foot off the ground. The piece of rubber at the bottom of my door is less than a cm thick and doesn’t look like there’s anything in it.
The sensor on the beam has the green and yellow light illuminated. The unit has red light illuminated, unless I interrupt the beam in which case the red light flashes. The motor works for up but not down.
I’ve tried pressing and holding the button which is apparently meant to override the sensor and lower the door even if the sensor is reporting an obstruction, but still nowt.
The battery sensors are a relatively recent thing; we have the light beam on ours. The current for raising the door seems to be ok so my guess would be that the motor's not getting the current to make it go down, possibly a faulty relay or loose connection in the control box or a loose wire or connector on the motor. You could probably fault-find it with a meter if you've got one. If it's not that then it could be something to do with the end stop mechanism in the motor, which would be a real pain to fix (new motor probably).
Thanks Rio. Good suggestion on the testing if the motor is getting power. I do have a multi meter. The thing is it seems the motor always is being told to go up. So - button press, door goes up. Press again it stops. Press again it goes up. Press again it stops etc. When the door is fully open it just clicks- I guess relay telling the motor to go up but it’s at the limit so nothing.
Sounds more like the control unit logic has got confused somehow then. Have you tried using a remote to send it down? Ours has occasionally confused itself with the button on the controller but the remotes sort it out. Also obviously try unplugging it and plugging in again!
I tried the remote and that Does the same. Tried the off on thing a few times too.
When you say the remote does the same, do you mean the down button on the remote sends it up? Or does it just not do anything? (I’m assuming your remote has 3 buttons, up down and stop). Either way probably time to get the multimeter out.
No just one button on the controller and remote. It cycles between down /stop/up/stop/down etc when working normally.
If its of any use / interest... our door failed to get started on opening / would stop about an inch or 2 from the ground. That was due to a worn out motor. So sound like something is up in the logic control like someone else hs suggested
When it runs out of steam on the way up it’s possibly the motor capacitor that’s gone. I fixed ours with a £2 replacement from eBay. Easy to replace but hard to get to, so not something to undertake unless you have an insatiable curiosity on how things work, time on your hands and a pop riveter. Not the problem the OP has though; as you say probably something on the logic board.
Roller shutter was defective on the garage of the house we just moved into! Wired the motor unit (4 wires - up, down, neutral, earth) directly into the mains bypassing the control unit, it worked fine so confirmed it was the controller that was defective. Rather than getting a new controller I just used a 2-channel wifi relay which works great, only cost £20 and lets me control it from my phone/Siri 😀
Zilog - that thought did cross my mind. I wasn’t sure about the safety features have you got some sort of Logic (two relays in series perhaps) for the beam (ie. Door shut and beam not broken) or just up and down, so no safety.
Further update. The motor is ok. If I manually wire down it comes down, if I manually wire up it goes up.
there are LEDs on the circuit board (that can only be seen with the cover off) one for up and one for down. Oddly These do illuminate as expected but the signal still only seems to be sending the door up regardless of which one illuminates
