Need to get in some road mileage tomorrow, have to get from North London to friends in Tunbridge Wells. Anyone know a reasonable road route that avoids the bigger dual/triple lane A roads?

I can offer a bit of help as I used to commute between south London and Tunbridge Wells.
Through London won't be an issue and I'l assume you have a route out of London sussed. From south London it will be something like Penge, Beckenham, Bromley. From Bromley follow the A21 until you see a sign for the A224, which will be on your right (the road will start tobecome dual carriage way just before you turn off). Ride along there and down past Badgers Mount / Polhill and on into Sevenoaks. Go straight through Sevenoaks on the A225 and along the Tonbridge Road and down to Riverhill. Just before you hit the roundabout to take you down onto the A21 at teh bottomof Riverhil take a left to the B245 towards Hildenborough. This road will take you into Tonbridge (keeping you off the A21 which is fast dual carriage way). From Tonbridge follow the signs for the A26 to Tunbridge Wells.

just one check, it looks like the A26 from Tonbridge to Tunbridge Wells is a larger A road so i was going to avoid it. is it safely rideable?

Yes, its fine. Up Quarry Hill, through Southborough and you're home and dry. My daily commute.

As an aside be sure to checkout Tribeca in Southborough (yes it's a roadie shop but it has nice kit).

Tribeca seems to be open for approximately four hours per week!

i'll keep an eye out on the way past, sounds like a good excuse to be late for lunch at the wife's friends' house!

worked well in the end - didn't stop at that bike shop (i did look out for it but it must not be on the road i took and i didn't have time to detour for it) but made it 45 miles from home to T-W in 2h 28m, so happy with that. 🙂
