Only just found out that Paul Sample died a few days ago. Getting into bikes in the late 70s and early 80s, Ogri was ever present and I loved the humour and incredible detail of Sample's artwork.

Like most wannabe biker teenagers of the time, I aspired to be Ogri but probably ended up more like his hapless, nerdy sidekick Malcolm!

Perhaps a little non-PC for modern tastes, it was a huge influence on my formative years. RIP Paul. Long live Ogri, Mitzi, Malcolm and Kickstart.

Sad loss of a great comic artist. I used to love Ogri too and as you say, the detail was great.

Used to have a biker mate who also went by the name of Ogri, for obvious reasons.

For those wondering who he was, the Ogri cartoon strip was the long running motorcycling equivalent of Mint Sauce. Appearing in "Bike" magazine from 1972 until 2009 and thereafter in "Backstreet Heroes". Ogri changed little over that time. An unreconstructed "greaser" riding a classic British cafe racer, a 1000cc Norvin V twin named "Armageddon". Open face helmet, goggles, jeans and greasy leather jacket. With his on/off girlfriend Mitzi, his dog kick start and his nerdy mate Malcolm.

Non bikers might be better more familiar with Paul Sample's artwork from the covers he drew for several Tom Sharpe books.

RIP.

He also did the cover for this book my mate wrote back in the day

Also, it's Paul Sample's fault that I feel slightly guilty every time I look at the Ovlov on my drive.

Grew up reading ogri in the back of dad's bike mag.

Dad passed last year but this has brought back many memories growing up on the back of his bikes*

I'd forgotten all about Ogri

Sad to hear but there will be folk all over the place and spanning the generations where he will have been a rite of passage growing up - not always PC child friendly either 😉

*Still got his greasy Ogri style leather jacket from the 80s - still wear it and I'm sure folk think it looks ridiculous. Don't care.

@trail_rat sorry to hear about your dad, but hope remembering Ogri brings back happy memories. There are/were quite a few anthologies of the Ogri strips for sale if you wanted to travel further along memory lane.

I too loved Ogri... I read it throughout the 1980's.

Under my bike leathers I would normally be wearing a T-shirt with an Ogri cartoon on it. I thought I was pretty cool😎 😆

I do wonder what Paul sample would have made of MTBers.

Oh damn, I hadn’t heard about this, while I was never a biker, I used to buy the mag and I loved Ogri, and my brother I’m sure will be gutted to hear this, he and his club mates are sure to have a massive piss-up to celebrate Paul’s life, as the club is OGRI MCC, and their colours are Ogri on a red background.

My brother’s in the centre wearing sunglasses.
