I wanted to like Bone Temple but there was just too much that was unbelievable.

It's been 28 years...

Where did the immaculate tracksuit come from?

Who has a half full gas bottle just laying around?

How did the music stop after the first track?

And other similar questions.

I know it's fiction but it's not supposed to be fantasy is it?

Just watched One Battle After Another. There's a lot of hype around it and it seems to be a huge hit with the critics, but I was very underwhelmed.  I just don't get what all the fuss is about.

Totally agree.

PTA has made some amazing films this wasn't one of them. The last third was pretty good though as it moved into standard thriller mode.

I also think Sinners whilst extremely interesting is not the amazing film the Oscars think it is. In fact it's rather clunky but does have some amazing bits and bobs in the production.  (From Dusk til Dawn was a much better.)

If you want a break from the dull grim films/tv that permeate these days and you like a bit of Neil Diamond - then watch "Song Sung Blue" - true story about a Neil Diamond tribute act . Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson.

Go in cold - the story is pretty bonkers but very entertaining.

But we loved it.

What about Europe getting its act together while Britain disintegrates into a no go disaster zone. Where do they get their crazy ideas from?

Good horror always has allegory.

So, let me get this straight - you lot had the opportunity to go to the cinema and you didn’t go to see Hamnet?

I saw it. As dead kid movies go, it's a riot. Jessie Buckley is great in it. Was less convinced by some of Paul Mezcal's lines (the "To be or not to be" scene was a bit of a stretch), but I liked his physical performance in the final sequence.

Wife was a bit befuddled towards the end, as she doesn't really know Hamlet and struggled with the dialogue, but she got the emotional "beats" nonetheless.

Liked the grimy production design. Everyone looked like they needed a good wash.

looks aimed at kids but only 40 somethings will remember the original!

You could have said the same about Transformers when those films first came out.

Kids have 40-something parents and the trick to a good kids film is to have references and in-jokes for the parents who take them to the cinema to enjoy too

Kids are the key cinema audience at the moment, so something you can sell toys off the back of, and that your dad isn't overly reluctant to drive you to, is shrewd enough.

Where this might fail in that respect  - and I hate to break it to you - but people who remember Masters of the Universe will actually be in their mid 50s - mostly too old to have kids that need to be accompanied to the cinema and too young to be baby sitting grandchildren

So, let me get this straight - you lot had the opportunity to go to the cinema and you didn’t go to see ......

I was very bored of it by halfway through, nothing that hasn't been done several times before, and better. Although I agree there were some interesting/ atmospheric scenes.

The sexy dancing reminded me of a scene in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story though 😂

Not only that, 'outside' know that there are colonies of people scratching out a living on teeny groups dotted about. These people aren't being rescued, or given any help. Nothing.

I just don't get what all the fuss is about.

I gave up with an hour left. The constant background soundtrack was making me anxious, the few moments where there wasn't any discordant off kilter violins or piano (designed to be like that, I get the point) were like blessed relief, and then they'd start up again. Waaay to long, not funny enough, not serious enough. Good timing though, got to hand them that.

We've been to see Hamnet and H is for Hawk, the theme for 2026 is grief. I think they were both good attempts at two of my favourite books of the last decade. There is so much more to H is for Hawk than shown on screen and I'd recommend anyone to read it but I think they wisely decided just to concentrate on one part of the book

I thought One Battle After Another was the film of the year - Sean Penn should definitely win a best supporting actor prize - until I saw Marty Supreme. I was on the edge of my seat for most of it.

(There was an underlying fascination with oral sex too.

Not sure what that was adding.)

Too many ideas when it should have been leaner. It really wasn't a big story. It was a slight horror story padded with a weird blend of artsy/YouTube gen scenes.

Technically Michael B. Jordan playing both parts was very impressive.

The best scene for me by far is when  Jack O'Connell turns up to the shack - being pursued. That was shot beautifully dark and eerie.

The gore at the end was so over the top it just switched to another genre and not in keeping with the tone.

That's a shame as I think the last hour is the most solid as it turns into a conventional thriller.

But I was almost at that point.

There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread are in a different league.

But I've a feeling that One Battle will mop up at the Oscars.  I can't see Sinners getting it. Just too bizarre.

Yep, I'd agree with that, that scene were the past and future music gets blended in, is a highlight and I thought it was going to be a real jumping off point, but the film really just failed to capitalise on it. White people as literal monsters was done by Get Out, and better I thought. The twins thing, while technically well done, was a bit of a dead end otherwise, was there any point of 2 Michael Jordans? None of the characters seemed to be developed, and given the length of the thing, I couldn't understand why

Yeah, my wife was of the same opinion. I couldn't be doing with it. PTA has always been a bit uneven though IMO

Yes was all over the shop - reeks of a million borrowed ideas - which is fine if it comes together.

If it all comes down to the KKK - the there are plenty of better examples without weaving it around a bizarre horror music mashup. (The KKK then felt like a tag on).

Only one of his I just can't watch is Inherent Vice.

Loved Licorice Pizza. Slight but compelling.

There Will be Blood, is about a good a film as you're ever going to see, Pizza is perfectly fine for what it is, if it's on, I'll watch it...And then there's Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Inherent Vice? WTAF?

It's like two people in the same body struggling for control

I remember going to see Magnolia at the cinema - it's something like 3hrs long with Tom Cruise doing an interesting character.

I quite 'enjoyed' it at the time but Robert Altman's Short Cuts was a much better interpretation of this idea.

(I've always loved those inter-connected story themes that work so well in LA.)

Of course Pulp Fiction came along and ripped up the playbook.

I liked Boogie nights too! That's a long while ago though.

Going full circle I'm going to put One Battle in the not so great camp.

But will give it another viewing at home.

Yeah same, I liked the fact it didn't spoon feed the story from the start, but I didn't find it very compelling.

Sinners on the other hand a lot of posters have mentioned I thought was fantastic. I had no expectations based on any Awards nominations etc, I just saw the trailer, liked the cast and really enjoyed it. Great music, looks great, nice humour.

I watched Marty Supreme feeling like I was missing something the whole way through. A not particularly likeable protagonist and a story that felt like it jumped around in chaotic fashion. Well acted, but felt like a bit of a mess to me.

I'm 50 and I remember Masters of the Universe as something that mainly kids a year or two younger than I was were into, so I'm not sure that "mid 50s" is quite right here.

Pretty much, i'm *checks* 44 and it was aaaammmaaazzziinnggg when it came out. I'm not going to watch it again, and will rather just assume that it hasn't aged at all and is still just as good

I think maybe I would have enjoyed it more if it didn't feel like a rehash of about half a dozen other things I had already seen (or been forced to sit through whilst wife watched them) e.g. True Blood, Django Unchained, Vampire Diaries, 12 Years a Slave, Shawshank, Greenmile, etc. etc. I just feel that era of American History, and Vampires in general, have both been milked as much as they can be for the current while.

I also think Sinners

..wasn't that a 2025 film? I saw it last year anyway.

We went to see Marty Supreme and left before the end. Horrible, unlikeble characters yelling at each other. If I wanted that I'd watch Eastenders. A review I read said he was a dick, but a likeable dick. Nope, he was just a dick. And the CGI'ed ping pong balls looked crap.

But I guess the Oscars shone a light on it and I can't remember seeing a 2025 movie thread. Or I haven't seen it.

Felt similar, but then the Safdie brothers are a bit "one trick pony" c,f. Daddy Long legs - New York man gets custody of his kids - is an obnoxious prick to everyone he meets, Uncut gems- New York man is diamond dealer- is an obnoxious prick to everyone he meets - Marty Supreme - New York man is table tennis player...you get the picture. Plus I think I've reached peak Chalamet now thanks.

So, what is worth seeing in 2026?

I loved Raw and Titane, so thought Alpha by Julia Ducournau would be good, but never made it to a cinema near me, maybe the local arthouse will show it, but that's being refurbed.

Then there was The Mastermind (Kelly Reichardt) but didn't see that down here either.

"Send Help"?  trailer says nah

"Crime 101" ? was the only decent looking film trailer when saw Marty S, so maybe. Certainly has the names - Hemsworth, Ruffalo, Keoghan, Berry, Nolte

Saw Nouvelle Vague a couple of days ago.  I enjoyed it, but I am not sure how much of that depended on knowing what it was about and having seen "A Bout de Souffle".

It would be interesting to hear what a younger person whose cinematic knowledge doesn't go back that far* thinks of it.

*I was 0-2 at the time of the events of the film, but New Wave stuff was regularly shown on telly when I was growing up.
