RIP.

With the passage of time I think many politicians of his generation will come to be counted. Sadly I can’t see that of the current crop. They seem less keen to hold beliefs and prosecute them. I may not have agreed with them, but I never denied their sincerity.

A sad loss.

He did a History Podcast with Dan Snow a few weeks back. I thought he sounded ill and I wasn't surprised when he announced he had cancer a few days later.

It's here:
https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/dan-snows-history-hit/e/56894184

(FWIW If anyone listens I think many historians would seriously question his conclusions so take it as an interesting perspective, but with a pinch of salt.)

Agree with everyone else, fairly decent bloke, fairly decent politician and from a generation of Politicians that really were head and shoulders above today's.

RIP PA, and thanks for your service to the UK, as a Soldier and as a Public Servant.

I'm saddened by this news, the loss of a basically decent bloke with a lifetime dedicated to public service both as a Marine and a people's politician.
Rest easy, Sir.

It seems to me many of our finest politicians have been ex military or ex diplomatic service. Too many of the current tawdry bunch are simply ex Eton.

Heard him speak a few times in the late '80's and met him once, intelligent, down to earth (I remember him rolling up in a slightly scuffed rover and having a sneaky fag after his speech) a thoroughly decent man (and I see someone has already done the cheap shot...very well done you scotroutes)

Regardless of your politics if you want to see the measure of the man, look at the work he did in Bosnia for the UN.

"With Power that would make a liberal blush." (I'm paraphrasing but he said something like that.)

Very sad news. Drew me to the liberals where I’ve remained since (bar the odd bit of tactical voting).

How the country badly needs Statesman like Ashdown (and Major) today.

Despite scotroutes/druidh/onion’s advancing age, he steadfastly refuses to grow up. Gotta love that.

That's no age at all, didn't even realise he was ill. Condolences to his family, any death (not just before Xmas) is a terrible event

Just read his obituary in the Times.
His first dalliance with a lady was with the maths tutor his parents had paid for to help with his poor acedemeic performance.

Think I like him even more 😀

He left his mark cranberry. Like you - except you’ve been more of a stain.
