**** that's a shock, like others I grew up with his comedy.

Comic Strip being my fave. Off to pick the in-laws from the airport so its going to have to be the CF part in Blackadder on the player in the car.

Hey Hey BAD NEWS.

RIP sir.

(Alan b'stard)

There's so many to chose when you think of it, from his Jackanory reading george's marvelous medicine to Mr Jolly, and so on.
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, one of his best characters and definitely worth checking out is Colin Grigson on the Bad News soundtrack album- way funnier than the film....

😥

yours,
DenDennis

No way. I watched Bottom Live so many times. Even went to see them live. The Young Ones were Genius too. And Drop Dead Fred...

Just seeing the images in this thread bring a smile to my face.

Very sad news 🙁

I grew up watching countless episodes of Bottom. I don't know why but the one that always sticks in my memory is the Xmas episode. Where Eddie makes Vodka margerine and they find the baby Jesus and offer Terrys All Gold, a Frankinstein mask and the aftershave, Grrrr.

Just heard it on the Car Radio at the end of the News so it must have only just come through.

RIP Rik, I didn't really get The Young Ones when I was younger but saw an episode a while ago and its genius.

I best remember him in Bottom but reading this thread makes you realise how much he actually did otherwise.

A true English Actor and Comedian who will be sadly missed.

Very, very sad.

Drop Dead Fred was my childhood.

Watching Bottom quiet enough not to get caught was my younger Teenage years.

Going to have a lot of laughter in his memory.

Edit: I am laughing just thinking of the camping episode in Bottom....

Damn, that's a shame. RIP.

Loved most of his work and I still think the funniest thing I've ever seen was the bottom live 2 tour in Liverpool. Absolutely brilliant.

WTF??? I can't quite believe that. Was he even ill?

A huge loss though. The world is a less funny place now.

A genuine loss to comedy 🙁 There are so many things he's done that have genuinely made my stomach hurt from laughing.

RIP

Proper sad.

Gone way too early.

A genius of alternative 80s and 90s comedy, the type of which we probably won't ever see again.

RIP fella

I guess repeatedly getting hit with a frying pan is bad for you after all.

RIP. Far too young.

Sad news.

A very perceptive guy and beautifully subversive comedy a lot of the time.

The New Statesman in particular just keeps coming true time and time again.

RIP

Seems to have been taken down. Fortunately it exists elsewhere...

"Opening my very own Twitter to stop another b'stard from doing it. So f... off & don't expect to hear from me any time soon. Love Rik x"

And that was it (edited by me), all he ever tweeted.

Saw him on the Alan B'Stard tour a few years back. Brilliant. RIP

So many classic lines from the young ones and bottom that became phrases we used all the time. Bit like Monty Python lines I guess.

Very sad to hear this news.
He was a comic legend.

What a bloody shame.

Many years ago, I worked with another member of the Blackadder cast. He told me that Mayall, in Flash mode was bordering on impossible to work with. Partly because much of it was ad libbed, but mainly because it was so bloody funny!

A sad loss.

I don't normally touch alcohol on a Monday night but this evening I'll be having a few in tribute to one of the great comic actors of our age. I was at school when The Young Ones came out. It was complete cult viewing for all in my class. We would spend the next day quoting lines. And the University Challenge episode is still one of the single greatest sit com episodes every made

I also loved Filthy, Rich and Catflap which I reckon is always overlooked for some reason.

"Worlds biggest bogey bum, rick, Britain"
Seen the young ones episodes so many times. Was quite young at the time and my dad banned them from the telly. We still found a way to watch even back then!

And the grown-ups will say "But why are the kids crying?"
And the kids will say "Haven't you heard? Rik is dead! The People's Poet is dead!"

WHAT a quote, well done sir.

Just saw this (sad/wry smile) ....

Adrian Edmondson said of Rik Mayall: "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him.

"And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish b*****d."

I went to see him and his spoof rock band "Bad News" at Portsmouth guildhall many moons ago.
They were brilliant, I have never laughed so much in my life. They were also remarkably talented as musicians- I've heard much worse from "proper" bands.

RIP properly talented bloke
