Heading to New York later this month. Looking at bikes on Spinlister and considering renting one for a couple of days.

Any one ridden in the city? I've ridden in cities before but worry about dealing with NY traffic. Am I being a wimp?

Any recommendations for places to ride, other than Central Park?

Thanks.

Don't bother use the sub way.

You would have to be mega crazy to ride on the roads!

Just make sure you're packing heat.

Imnshe it's okay as long as you expect the worst at every turn and don't obey any road rules. Having said that, it'll be pretyt hot, most likely.

PS unlawful possession of a firearm in public space of NYC carries a 3.5 year mandatory minimum sentence, weapons permits are rarely issued to US citizen residents of NYC, let alone foreigners, and NYC doesn't even crack the Top 30 most dangerous cities for violent crime in the US, so all in all you don't need any "heat"! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

There was a great article in the Guardians travel section about riding in New York, have a look on the website for it. It was on the 21 of July.

Look at a blog written by a guy called Eben Weiss

Central park is easiest, full of some very flash machinery.

You can ride all around the outside of Manhattan, most is shared cycle/sidewalk, only small amounts of road towards UN; you can visit Manhattan's own mountain biking trail at highbridge park mid-route.

If you want a longer ride, head over the George Washington bridge then pick up the cycle trail along the banks of the Hudson - you can go for as long as you like.

I have ridden on the roads themselves a few times - 'fun' in that exhilarating/I almost died sort of way!

Whatever you do, best to take advantage of the time difference and get up early to avoid the worst of the traffic, then recover with a fatboy breakfast.

I recommend a pedal through East Harlem and South Bronx.

No, I just realised there would be nowhere to conceal a gun in a pair of lycra shorts.

I did a circuit of Manhattan once - some cool stuff to see and a pretty interesting ride - as someone says, you can avoid roads a lot of the way. On the roads things can be pretty intimidating, cars go down the avenues really fast plus watch out for pedestrians! Riding round central park is pretty cool thing to do, also the route mentioned over the Washington bridge is quite nice - though if you visiting probably short time probably better ways to spend your time than a long ride out of the city.

Watch out for the potholes!
