Surfing is just mucking around the edges, bit like a downhill bike mentality.

What you really want to do is get one of these and get some real action 🙂

NO, surfing is just beyond anything a bike could deliver, and I've done lots of the bike thing, plus lots of Jura...

and i mean proper waves

Never tried surfing, but until you catch the good wave, it just looks bloody boring.

The 30 second buzz you get (if you're good enough) may well beat biking, but other than that, I can't see it.

On a surf ski you can catch every wave and ride it forever 🙂

None of this short run into the shore stuff.

I used to live in Townsville (North Queensland) and we often used to paddle over to Magnetic Island. The ferry boat captains used to let us ride their bow waves all the way (about 10km)

Surfing has it, but it isn't a competition.

I started mtb cycling to get fit for surfing but then found the cycling was giving me more kicks. I still surf when in Australia and very occasionally in Saunton but I much prefer riding in the Peaks. Incidentally, if anyone is thinking of buying a beginner's board, look no further than TakeOffBoards, they are amazing for the money.

Surfing can be the most frustrating activity in the world.

Turn up at beach expecting decent waves and the chances are it's flat or blown out (or whatever the terminology is).

Actually get out and spend what feels like hours sitting there waiting for a decent wave to arrive, get bored, catch second rate wavelet, fall off board, turn around to see the wave you were waiting for rolling in. Repeat until too cold or arms are falling off.

No contest - my local trail is up there as we speak, still pointing downhill (or uphill if you want!), still waiting to give me a buzz (or for me to give it a buzz?). It will be there in the rain, snow, dark, wind.

I wouldn't get rid of my surf gear, but bikes are far better.

Biking is fun but doesn't come close to the sheer awesomeness of getting barrelled.

IdleJon +1

I really enjoy surfing at times, and catching "that" wave is a great feeling that make the frustration worthwhile. However, overall cycling wins for me.

There's a bit more of a chance of getting awesomely barrelled in Billy Buds or in magazines than there is around the English coastline.

riding / snowboarding are in my top spot
surfing is good but its too frustrating and in the matter of great wave versus a great trail? Has to be the trail really doesnt it! Nice loamy downhill whizzing through the trees! And riding a maaaahoosive mountain in fresh pow! Ohhhh yeah! But im much better at riding and biking than I am at surfing! If I got good I might change my tune!

As much as i love surfing biking will always win for me. Surfing relies way too much on conditions whereas biking can be done in any conditions. On the other hand this may be a biased opinion as i live 10 minutes from the chase in the midlands while my surfboard is tucked up warm in my brothers room in newquay 😛

riding bikes....

....is great, I tend not to compare it to anything else, I enjoy it for what it is, it's different to my other hobbies/interests and they all enrich my life in their own ways

I've not surfed, but to beat the sheer variety of feelings and experiences that cycling in it's many forms can give it would have to be bloody good. Maybe it is...
I do think a bike is too versatile to be compared with a surfboard

I so want surfing to be better than biking but the trails are closer than the sea and I seem to do the bike pedaling thing better than the wave splashing thing (just)

Still got my old board Dave?

There was a cracking longboard wave at my local yesterday but I decided to go riding instead. Does that answer the question? It was overhead and clean on Wednesday though, so definitely didn't go riding then.

I like the fact that the two are so different. If I get a bit bored with one, I just put a bit more emphasis on the other. I do think that you're almost guaranteed a good time biking, whilst there must have been hundreds of times I've turned up at the beach and been disappointed (always better than school/work though). Being so weather dependant does make surfing a pain, whilst biking is all about the right tyres and clothes.

There's a bit more of a chance of getting awesomely barrelled in Billy Buds or in magazines than there is around the English coastline

You're not looking in the right places, my friend. 😉

In this country i'll take the bike.

Other parts of the world then yeah, i'll go along with you.

Can't be doing with the winter suit, cold carpark, 2 ft of slop, audi drivers, family camp sites, dirty sea ..blah blah.

Right time, right place, best sport/fun in the world. Just not here and not now. 🙁
