Got myself some of these.

Reversible USB leads

Bloody brilliant. Makes one of the shittest connectors ever made, really quite OK.

Why did I not know about these sooner?

I have no idea what witchcraft is going on with them but they work fine on everything I have tried them with. Even the USB A connector is reversible.

Bit baffled. Micro USB pinout is not symmetrical. Ground at one end, +5V at the other, same with the data pins 🤔

The contacts are only on one side, so that just has two sets of contacts. Surprised they stay in to be honest.

But only on one face, the pins on the other face won't engage anything with the plug right way up so can simply be terminated in reverse ready for upside down connecting.

USB C resolves the orientation issue... and yes the cables don't stay in.

I'd rather go back to micro USB and have the faff of getting it wrong and trying again, than the cable falling out frequently and end up with a flat battery.

isnt that going to reverse the polarity?

USB C is great and I have never had a problem with cables falling out.

These reversible ones don't fall out either, I have used them for charging, data transfer, a drone etc. All fine.

They seem quite susceptible to getting fluff in then you can't quite push the connector home and it falls out. Probably only a significant issue for devices kept in a pocket. Easy enough to clean out with a pointy stick though.

They do stay in with a positive click, but as said above the socket on your phone fills with fluff in your pocket, meaning that the connector can't go in all the way. I thought mine was going in far enough, but I pulled a couple of kgs of felt out of it and it worked way better after that.

Not if you plug it into one of these dongles.

In a similar spirit of evil ideas that really shouldn't work, I give you the combined lightning and micro USB cable:

Violates all relevant standards, but apparently it works!

They stay in fine for the purpose of charging but for data I'm less impressed - things like external drives for my laptop very easily lose connection - its a shame the plug / socket aren't just a tad longer / deeper

As a 'standard' it also has all sorts of problems - theres a whole variety of data rates and wattages using the same plug/lead/socket but nothing about a lead or a socket tells you how much of either it might demand or support.

Why have to plug them in yourself when you can have magic Magnetic charge leads.

These are ace.

Never had an issue with micro USB other than a charger plug eventually giving up. Apple 32 pin (or whatever it is) on the other hand...
