The pane on the french window is starting to mist up - any installers know what size glass you usually go for, 4mm or 6mm, toughened?

Tempted to replace it myself, otherwise any idea how much a pane approximately 1.1m x 1.9m would cost including installation?

(I’ll take it out to measure accurately)

We got a recommendation for a local double glazing company to do ours: was easy to let them do it perfectly. I could probably have done it myself - but possibly got it wrong the first time etc.

From original estimate:

To supply and install 2 x New Double Glazed Units 193.75

A panel that size will be heavy and need topping and tailing properly. I'd get a glazier to do it.

Do it yourself, 5 minute job.
It will probably be 4mm/12mm/4mm but check.
Toughened if below a certain height above floor level.
You’ll pay about 5x to get someone to do it.
I’m doing 12 tomorrow, should only take an hour.

Look at https://www.sealedunitsonline.co.uk/regular/default_mob.aspx

I paid to have mine done. 4ft square veluxes. cost about £40 each to have them fitted. and £90 per pane. A bargain price as they are taking all the risk of measuring and fitting

I do almost all of my own work n the house but glazing is one of the few things I pay to have done

Piece of cake to chance a sealed unit. Have changed loads, from little 250mm square up to 2m x 3m, on the ground and from ropes 50-100m in the air.
Useful to have a sucker or two for handling it at that size.
Something to pry the trim out without damaging it, tend to use a hard plastic ‘scraper’ type thing. Take the longest edge trims out first and replace last. Maybe mark the in removal to remind you where they came from.
A soft faced hammer to refit the trim.
Keep an eye on what spacers are fitted and where.

Given the ease of removal, quite simple to pop the old one out to get proper measurements and refit until you get the new one.

They are easy to do but...

1) The rubbers (silicone bead?) can go manky and could be difficult to replace if the units are not en vogue any more

2) I tried to replace a 2.5m x 2.0m upstairs unit by myself and was very lucky not to drop either the old or new ones. For the bigger ones upstairs, get a helper.

3) I use use an old scraper to get the plastic bead out and a block of wood to put it back. No special tools required.

The units are cheap as chips from your local glaziers even with exciting things like argon and K glass...

Timely this thread as my missis just got back from the shops and found a smashed unit at the front of the house.

Our local glaziers is shut due to the covid restrictions. Is the sealed units online link up there the best place to get one at the moment? I'm happy to measure up and replace myself, but don't want a temp sheet of wood in there for months!

Interesting site that. Any idea if the self-cleaning options work as advertised? Always thought it would be way more expensive than that.

In my experience of doing a fair bit of high level glazing cleaning, ‘self cleaning’ glass doesn’t do that at all. It also seems to mark a lot more easily.

I had a delivery from them yesterday, took about 3 weeks I think.
Just fitted them, all seems good.

I went to the local glazier. The units took less than a week from order. I didn't need to but can see no reason why you couldn't order over the phone if you needed to.

They are doing emergency call outs only, and I'm not getting stung for their service rates. Product from the shop is reasonably priced, but as soon as the van tyres leave the car park..... 💲💲💲💲😲
