OK, on my third Desire after a few problems including a need for almost constant reboot to get incoming calls, & one that was just a rattling (I presume) speaker that drove me nuts.
So should I just leave this one standard, or start messing with the settings & installing apps?

TBH I don't really do much with my phone outside of what it's designed for, ie talk, text, email & the internet. I must say I enjoyed Angry birds, but didn't play it that much as I was always worried about the battery.

So over to you, is there anything I really need, or should I just leave this one alone?

Cheers in advance.

What's the point of getting a phone that runs Android and then not installing any apps? Just get a normal dumb phone!

Ha ha chaps,very droll.

In seriousness a cheaper phone won't give me the usable internet that I like having, yes it would be usable to some, but I just wouldn't bother as the experience wouldn't be the same.

An Iphone you say? how fanboi of you*

*Wishes I had just swallowed the whole fanboi thing & just got one, the three people in the office that have them have never had problems outside of battery life & cracked screens when they drop them.

Its not the apps and settings that cause problems with handsets unless you are rooting it and cranking up the processor power. I work in a large multinational mobile phone shop and find that the Desire is one of the most reliable handsets we sell. People often come back complaining of the battery life but its not limited to that handset. If you are careful with the apps you buy and get, theres no reason it should go wrong and you've just been unlucky. Have you always made sure its up to date software wise? (2.2 and recently 2.2.1)

Just got a Desire HD and compared to the N97 Mini it replaced it's comparable to replacing a Mk II Escort with a Ferrari.

As for battery life - my first day on the road saw it flat by 1pm - downloaded Juice Buster and the Ultimate Juice add-on, which manage power sucking functions & apps and battery life has shot right up

dooge, thanks for the serious answer, unexpected this time of night 😉

Phone is set to auto update, the one I got today is certainly running 2.2, not sure on the .1 thing though, currently charging the battery with the phone off after a full charge with it on, just like the forums say 😳 No 'cranking' for me, far to technical!

Cheers.

Also, do the Desire battery trick to improve charging effectiveness.

1. Fully charge overnight, with the phone switched ON.
2. Switch OFF, and plug into charger for an hour.
3. Switch ON for 10 mins or so
4. Switch OFF, and charge for an hour again.
5. Switch ON and use.

Doing this saw about a 30%ish improvement in capacity. Does need re-doing every now and then.

There are reasonable browsers on some of the dumb phones. i want to play apps so just about to change my nokia e72 for a motorola defy.

the nokia has a very decent battery life so hope i am not disappointed!

I guess you dont want to play with the settings as its a waste of time if the phone has to go back again.

Sounds to me like you've been unlucky. Never had any problems with my Desire (or the Hero I had before). There shouldn't be any problems with installing apps as long as you're doing through Market and normal playing about with the settings shouldn't fubar it either.

I've read about the super-charge trick Dave_aber mentions but think I read that doing that will, in the long run, reduce the battery's lifespan. Although at least you can replace the battery on a Desire, unlikely certain other phones 😉

What I meant is people 'overclock' their processors to make them faster, just like computers. Of course, the manufacturers set the processor speeds at just the right balance, but people want to fiddle. I hope you dont continue to have problems buddy!

My wifes Desire wouldnt connect to the internet on 3g, well very occasionaly anyhow.

Orange first of all replaced the SIM card, then the phone and no problems since.
