How on earth do these come out without ripping half the ceiling with them?

Tried the tilt to one side and gently ease the damn thing out but they just seem very tightly held in the roof space.  Trying to paint around them rather than replace!

Depends how tight the hole is, sometimes it’s not possible to get them out without having to make good afterwards. If you pull the fitting directly down just enough to see the spring clip then get your fingers on the clip and push in as you pull down, that can work.

If you’re painting just pull them down 10mm as an example and masking tape around, you can masking tape them in situ quite often for painting.

Some of mine are spring loaded, others I twist out as they have 2 metal fan things sticking out pressing them in the hole.  Been in situ 20 years they are tough to get out.

OK, the masking tape method will have to suffice.  Glad its not just me then!  I had foolishly assumed that modern fittings would have clever design and that I was missing something obvious!

I have some that are two part - the lampholder comes out of the mount like a bayonet fitting.  Just check yours are not like that as these ones you have to remove the lampholder before removing the mount

mine all have seperate bezels on them which just turn slightly to release and remove so i can just remove those and paint.

makes life easier for the sparky as well as if a customer decides to change there mind on bezel colour it's an easy swap.

I thought you just needed to push the light up into the housing slightly, then twist slightly. Not sure which way, though. I don’t use them myself, but a friend needed a couple replaced.
Then replace them with LED versions.

pretty sure the ones we got, you just pull at and the arms fold back on themselves.

Try gently unscrewing the bezel. The lights that I installed have a removable bezel for painting (or to change the finish).
