employmentquestionworld...

So, have been short listed for a fairly senior position with a different company which, if successful at the next stages* will involve a relocation from Copenhagen to Turkey. Relocation expenses will be covered, but what's the accepted good form: do I ask at the final interview or only ask if an offer is made? If it is at the interview stage, I need to be doing some research ASAP. Have never really ex-pat'd before as despite living here for six years I have always been local.

* I'm in the last three, with potential telephone interview next then a final in-country interview and familiarisation trip for family. Still some way to go, but this will move quick, one way or the other.

Say you're at the pub, sitting at a table with some mates. One is considering getting a round in, but hasn't decided yet. Do you ask him for a cheeky shot at this point, or when he's at the bar getting them in?

Indicative expenses now, and then its all about negotiation.

Not sure if it's still 'allowed', but when I was an expat I got paid in the UK and lived abroad - mean I could have an NT tax code, ie no tax. Just paid NI.

I just moved enough money into an overseas account for my rent, the rest I took out of the cash machine. No tax etc paid in the country we lived. That along with the depreciating currency meant after a year we were living for 'free'. 🙂

Just wait until you are offered the job!! Don't be presumptive

Once you have it, haggle like a bastard. Ad if they don't stump up , turn the job down.

If they want you , they will come back.

Now, Turkey is much lower cost that Denmark - so what are your expectations and what did you base that on?

PS relocation expenses - my ex company shelled out around 15k euros to move me back , when we got divorced.

RichPenny summed it up, it's part of the offer and will reflect how much they want you really.
Things to check are tie ins, paybacks, tax and durations.
Also what are the visa/permit regs http://www.turkishconsulate.org.uk/en/work_visa.asp
If you want out/ they want you out, you find a better job next door what happens.

Just leave it to the offer, if you already know relocation expenses will be covered then they must have dealt with this before so save all the hassle haggling and stress by just letting the company arrange everything, packing , shipping, temp accommodation while you look for a house / wait on you stuff , rental car? Take mikewsmiths advice if you leave early they may expect a prorated fee back from you , this is where you need to be sure of relocation terms
Good luck hope it works out

Thanks all, sounds like the appropriate and easiest approach is to leave it until such time as an offer might be made.

The salary and package framework has already been outlined so I've a good idea of what any offer might look like. Good suggestions for questions to think about when reviewing this, though.

Is it for the BBC? If so, don't worry. They just give you a blank cheque
