hello all, my bro-in-laws birthday is coming up and mrs. G and I are thinking of getting him a red letter ( or similar ) day driving experience.

can anyone recommend a particular car, location ( he's in high wycombe ) , or alternate company to "red letter days"

cheers,
g

Many of them require you to simply be ballast whilst they hoon about.

I'd recommend the Land Rover experience, I did it a couple of years back. Great fun driving over stuff you thought impossible, and we only got to go on the easy routes.

As above I had a Ferrari experience, I had all of about 20 mins driving and they wouldn't let you hoon it too much, better off doing Minis or the like as the cars are less precious so they don't mind you giving it some 😀

yes, I saw that on one offer.. that you were a passenger while someone from the centre "drove at speed" and that is what I am hoping to avoid

so again... tips anyone?

I did this a couple of years ago:

The stock cars make up the meat of the day and are enjoyable enough, but for me the highlight was ragging a knackered old Ford Sierra with bald tyres round a gravel track in 2nd gear (power slides ahoy), then getting a robin reliant over on 2 wheels.

The speed is nothing compared to a ferrari but it is bluddy good fun and you get a decent amount of time behind the wheel doing stuff you wouldn't normally dream of.

Oulton Park used to do this type of thing. Single seaters under timed laps, stripped out XR3is (it was a long time ago).

Don't know if they still do it or if it's too far.

Years ago I did a day at Brands Hatch with Octagon Motorsports in single seater Palmer Audis. This was a Red Letter day and was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had.
Palmer Audis were proper single seater race cars, like mini Formula 1 cars, with around 250bhp and weighing the square root of **** all. The acceleration had me laughing like a mad thing. I came away swearing I wanted to be a race car driver.
The day started off with tuition, then went into coached driving around the track in Audi TTs, then more classroom tuition and then into the Audi TTs again. Once you'd 'passed' their proficiency run you then got to do 20 laps in the Palmer Audis.

highly recommend http://www.everymanracing.co.uk/

I went a few years back on a red letter day super car experience and drove Lambos, a Ferarri, Exige, Porsche and a Viper. They let you drive to your / the cars limit too, encourage overtaking etc. Brilliant day

caterham slalom day.
basically the cars are set up to slide. they then lay a bunch of courses with cones. all very safe, because it's all at relatively low speed, but so much fun. there's a competition element to add a bit of interest between the drivers. you get to drive the cars hard, and with little concern for tyre wear. they do say that if you end up buying a seven, and it handles like these ones do, please bring it back. 😀
superb fun, and your 'turn' just keeps coming around.
i must go back again. can't recommend highly enough.

Mucho fun. Go to lastminute.com for details of where the events can be held, then approach the appropriate track for a discounted price.

did the ferrari testarossa drive. nice car, but as above, wasn't allowed to go nuts,,, also, so different from my fiesta at the time that it took two of my three laps to get used to it. the Rally driving looked good though, as they were ragging an old sierra through strawbales, not minding if you hit a few!
