I'm bored out of my mind with a mangled collarbone and am in need of some new things to watch.

My favorite shows are things like the wire, mad men and soprano's. I've seen just about every mtb'ing dvd going, but love all extreme sports.

i,ve seen most of the great well known movies from the last 20 years, but not so much of the less hyped films.

What are some suggestions for good stuff to watch?

I enjoyed the first 2/3 of the West Wing but lost interest when they brought in some new characters.

you could try The Shield - I thought it was great. Seven seasons should keep you going for a while.

Dexter is also good, as is Breaking Bad.

Documentaries - any of the Attenborough stuff (dirt cheap on DVD now). I loved Yellowstone and Galapagos as well.

Loads of good stuff out there.

Documentaries:
'Poor Kids' and 'Evicted' both by True Vision

On DVD, sort of a bit like documentaries but not quite 'London' 'Robinson in Space' and 'Robinson in Ruins' all by Patrick Keiler

If you like the Wire the 'Generation Kill' is from the same stable

The Killing started on C4 last week, you should be able to catch the feature length first episode on catchup

Planet Earth on Blu-Ray (if you have a player obviously) - 5 discs and none of it is dull, in fact most of it is outstanding.

Everyone did, I think.

Well, I'm fairly sure that's not what they want you to do, but yes. FWIW, I'm very happy with my subscription, I think it's well worth the money.

Email with details sent.

If you can speak French or live with subtitles, try finding Spirals a French crime drama. There's been three series and they're really engaging.

Engrenages is amazing atlaz! Good shout, probably my favourite crime series (Except series 1 of the Wire).

I worked my way through the Adam Curtis documentaries recently, Century of the Self, Power of Nightmares, etc.

Have also found a site with the whole of the World at War (greatest documentary series of ever imo) streaming but not sure if posting links to that sort of thing on here is allowed?

Trailer Park Boys. Funniest series I've ever seen. Takes a few episodes to find your bearings, but perseverence is well rewarded. The character development is brilliant. An unrecognised golden nugget.

Every friend I've lent the boxset to has been 'wtf?' initially but by the end they all adore it. Maybe it's a west of Scotland thing, though....

I recently watched 'the Pacific' miniseries. It was pretty affecting, and I ended up reading the autobiographies of a couple of the people in the series.

Oz... Hellishly grim but utterly brilliant, at least for the first couple of series. Wandered off a wee bit later on but still.

Just watching the 6th series of House, it really is a fine bit of work.

World at War. Epic telly.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, as above, will keep you busy for a while!

+1 for any BBC/Attenborough. Life, Planet Earth, Yellowstone. There's a box set of Werner Herzog docs which is good.

Just watched the first series of Sons of Anarchy and it was OK, but not up with the classix. Same with Carnivale. Deadwood's good, Breaking Bad is brill.

How about just sit and watch the TdF? I could happily do that non-stop.

When it isn't on, watch any of the BBC wildlife documentaries.

Never heard of Luther & Fringe. Is it any good?

<voiceover>

Luther is a hard-boiled cop on the edge. Ruthless and relentless, his reputation strikes fear into the hearts of criminals and colleagues alike. His ex wife is a former prostitute with a heart of gold who fell on bad times and left him for the head of the local crime syndicate. Luther hit the bottle hard and is now a recovering alcoholic; only a short step away from oblivion at the bottom of a bottle of Jack, the terrors Luther faces daily on the streets are nothing compared to battles he wages with the demons within.

Fringe is a lost soul looking for a purpose. Orphaned at an early age in a freak accident involving a hundred gallons of WD40, a killer whale and a Flymo, Fringe ran away from his abusive adoptive parents to join the circus. Now, as the best juggler in the business, consomethinge lion-tamer and owner of a thousand hats, the LAPD's newest recruit is the last thing Luther was looking for but could just be exactly what he needs.

If you really have got time to kill breath new life into your old movies by watching them in reverse. Titanic becomes a film about a mysterious ship that arrives just in time to save a bunch of people who are drowning in the Atlantic. And the cannonball run ends in a dead heat.

Just restarting this thread. 4OD is pretty good for watching stuff free online. Been watching Tony Robinson's Fact or Fiction about Boudica and Harold Godwinson link here: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/fact-or-fiction/episode-guide. Their series on 1066 was quite graphic, but very good. Link here: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/1066/4od
Also contains, when I last checked, lots of old series of Time Team - http://www.channel4.com/programmes/time-team/4od and Watercolour Challenge - http://www.channel4.com/search/?q=Watercolour+Challenge. Nice series to watch when you've got time.

Also liked an old show called Interview with a Poltergeist. Definitely made me believe in ghosts - http://www.channel4.com/programmes/interview-with-a-poltergeist.

Favourite box sets to buy have to be: Father Ted, Rising Damp, At Home with the Braithwaites and Moonlighting.

For documentaries - next week sometime on More 4 "Hell and Back Again".

Saw it on the big screen earlier this year, theres been a bit of a glut of Afganistan docs on the TV of late (which is nothing to moan about really) but this is an entirely, entirely, different creature - an amazing piece of portraiture. The director is a war photographer and the whole thing was filmed on a 5D - he worked alone, right in the line of fire - any frame could be an iconic photograph.

You need to watch Breaking Bad. It's the best thing on telly imo. Better than The Wire which I still think is a bit overrated anyway.

Dexter is alright but predictable, the first season was awesome as was S4. S6 is good so far as well.

I'm liking Person of Interest which I think is a new AMC show. Not very deep or clever story-wise but it's fun action-thriller stuff.

Oh and +1 for Fringe, probably my 2nd favourite after Breaking Bad 🙂

Battlestar Galatica

I tried (and failed) to enjoy that. Got about 2.5 series in and gave up - it was fracking awful.

Meerkat Manor is where it's at. And anything narrated by David Attenborough.

Another vote for Spiral

Treme is from the makers of The Wire and is very very good, takes a few episodes to get into it so stick with it.

Breaking Bad is very good, although they haven't got series 3 on iTunes for some reason?

Son's of Anarchy is ace, season 4 has just started in the states - the first two have been very good and it does seem to get better as it goes along

I've started watching Burn Notice while sitting on the Turbo trainer - its a bit cheesy but passes the time

The Wire is still the best thing I've seen on TV, still a void in my TV viewing that could only be filled by Mcnaulty, Omar and the rest...

Nah. Breaking Bad was great but quite a lot of it isn't very believable, whereas the Wire is mostly quite convincing (apart from the silly plot in the last series). The Wire just has such an incredibly broad scope as well.

I guess, I don't really look for "believability" in a TV show though. I liked The Wire but I think in general I'm not really a huge cop-drama fan. I did love The Shield though.
