Wired - portable enough to use with my iPhone but good enough quality for plugging in and listening to Bluray music recordings etc. Budget of around £75 max.

The Sennheiser HD239 seem to get good reviews?...?

TBH, I think anyone wearing full over-the-ear cans with a portable looks a complete tit. I whole-heartedly recommend these: http://www.meelec.com/MEElectronics_M6P_Stylish_Earphones_p/earphone-m6p-mee.htm
They sound superb, they're very comfortable, they're very unobtrusive, and they have a remote and mic that works with an iPhone, Touch, and, amazingly, the iPod Classic, which I found out by accident using them with my 160Gb Classic.

I swear by Sennheiser cx300' however I lost them and just got the cx300 mk2 and pretty impressed with the sound, they come in a little pouch, and they do fit in to my iPhone 4 socket even with a protective bumper on the phone as they have redesigned the plug, also the plug is gold plated, I have never phone earphones as comfortable as these.

CZ - I really don't mind looking a tit - I am walking more and more these days and really enjoy having music to listen to, in-ear 'phones annoy me and I want the flexibility to be able to listen to stuff at home / play PS3 games etc at decent volumes.

Will blow the budget a bit but I bought a pair of these a couple of months ago and have been mightily impressed.

I've got a set of Sennheiser CX 880s, they came in at around your budget and I've been very impressed with them.

BTW - I have a set of Bose in-ear headphones (came free with a Sound Dock) and I don't like them at all. I MUCH prefer the sound from over-ear phones (I was trying to fix pair of broken Sennheiser over-ear 'phones over the weekend (unsuccessfully) and even the brief bits of sound I got out of them were better than in-ear (IMO).

Sobriety - do you get any hiss from those? I have a set of Sennheiser RF wireless headphones and the hiss is dreadful (subsequently found out they suffer from interference from wireless networks etc which isn't helpful as my TV/PS3/Wireless etc are all together.

(I didn't choose them BTW - they were a gift which unfortunately get woefully under-used because I can't bear the hiss all the time). They will be going on Ebay to help fund the new set (It is because of this experience of wireless that I am leaning toward wired this time around).

AKG K99's. Cheap as chips, comfortable and sounding neutral - ie: source dependant.

If you really don't care what you look like then I recommend Grado SR60s - look dreadful, sound wonderful. Open though, so quite a bit of sound leakage.

Not that I could detect, they still surprise me as you can hear guitarists catching other strings on chords and stuff through them. I also own a set of HD595s for in house listening which are excellent as well.

Okay - so what is the difference between open and closed headphones (apart from the obvious)? I mean - I reckon I would be using these indoors with little background noise for most of the time but I would like the benefit of a closed design as and when I am out and about. However does this compromise the overall sound quality? If it does I would have to weigh up what I want most from them.

I thought this was going to be quite simple...

Closed ones don't irritate everyone within punching distance.

But is there a sound compromise?

Sennheiser pX100 II. I find these very good, nice warm open sound and clarity is great. Lightweight and foldable, cable is now single sided. Richer sounds have them at 39.99. I have listened to klipsch and sennheiser in ear but do prefer over ear.
