With the recent "update" of Chrome on Android I can no longer open bookmarks in a new tab and the ability to stop this new "feature" has been removed. As far as I am concerned this renders the bookmarks largely pointless as you now have to open a new tab for each each bookmark and open them individually rather than opening them all in the background.

I'm happy with the rest of Chrome but this browsing "experience" is really starting to annoy me (along with an inability to wrap text properly) so......what other Android browsers are there that perform well and allow me to open multiple bookmarks in background tabs without leaving the bookmarks page?

Cheers,

S

I always used to rate Dolphin. Loved the way you just swiped right for bookmarks. Can't remember now why I stopped using it and went to chrome.
Agree though about the tabs thing.

i find the different browsers hit and miss for different phones. always had htc but when i changed to my current m8, i decided to use the same browser that was perfect for me on my previous phone, dolphin mini. was no good on the m8 tho, ive found the stock internet app best on the m8.

Firefox. Nice add on for adblocking.

Chrome - 3 dots at top right -> Settings -> Merge tabs and apps -> Off

That's all you need to do on Chrome.

Brave browser: https://www.brave.com/

Blocks ads and trackers by default. Very fast!

Cheers for the suggestions. I will give them a spin and see if any of them work for me.

I find opera takes ages to start loading, it may be doing its compressing cleverly to save you data usage, but it's so slow to load compared to Chrome.

I liked Dolphin too, but have ended up using Firefox as it works ace.

So having downloaded pretty much every browser I could find I've come to the conclusion that CM browser is the best for what I want. Fast, attractive, renders nicely, easy to use and customise and had a good bookmarks manager.

As an added bonus the app icon looks like the thunder cats logo.

Cheers all,

S

Just unmerge the tabs as nemesis says.

I might be wrong but I don't think Opera even does any data compression anymore....I think they dropped that.
But I prefer it to any other android browser I've tried

How does unmerging the tabs and apps affect bookmarks not being able to be opened in a new tab? I've had that option switched off for over a year!

tap the tab number at the top
hit + icon for a new tab
choose bookmark

i used to use dolphin on old HTC phone, but that was mainly because the HTC browser and all the other HTC apps were pants. and on gingerbread, there was no option for chrome

chrome's the best browser I've used
never heard of CM browser

That whole opening a new tab in advance for each bookmark is what annoys me. I have groups of 8-10 bookmarks that I like to open together and then read. You used to be able to do this quickly and easily from the bookmarks page but it has been removed.

Chrome, and increasingly other Google apps, are great so long as you are happy being forced to do things the the way Google decide to suit their "design strategy" regardless of whether it is actually a better way. Seems that the have fallen down the Apple rabbit hole....

opera here - mainly for the ability to "zoom" into a column within a page and then also magnify the text and make it re-wrap to stay within the defined width

I'm not sure that any others do this

Just in passing - Chrome has some pretty heavy-duty compression built in these days....

On Android I used to find Chrome was clunky, bloated and touch support a bit buggy. Used some of the others but they all had niggly issues. In the end I'd use the stock Android browser. Basic, but it worked reliably. I had it syncing bookmarks with Chrome too though can't remember how. Though don't know if the stock browser is now Chrome. Gave up on Android a while back.
