Okay, so the spring classics have started, I'm missing the racing again and still can't afford the over priced monthly subscription for an all singing all dancing sports package.

So I'm led to believe that a VPN is the way forward, I've had a Google and it's totally incomprehensible to a luddite like me.

Could someone give me some pointers, I just want to watch cycling, not over throw foreign regimes or move money around the dark web 😬

Proton VPN. I'm looking at. Free part works OK with Proton mail.

I just noticed Imgur has been blocked in the UK.

Whats next, this forum or all forums 🙁

Golden Age of the internet is over.

Opera browser has a free VPN built-in 👍

Just press the private tab then the plus sign.

I was recommended Mullvad by a friend who works in cyber security for reasons I don't understand. What really got me is their pricing structure, which is about as transparent as you can get - it's €5 per month. No weird deals or long contracts, just a simple 'you give us some money, we give you a service' arrangement. They're also so keen on letting you stay anonymous that you can just post them the money in an envelope.

Doesn't support port forwarding if you need that. For bittorrent etc

Been using Nordvpn for a few years now.

Works fine on both my phone and laptop. Can be used on upto ten devices. The GF uses it, too.

I can pm you a link so that you get a few months free if signing up. Lettuce know.

For Privacy: Mullvad because they don't/won't rat you out or give away your info.

For just watching TV: Whatever works.

Much the same question from me but I haven't clue what most of the above means. Would some one like to do it without any 21st century words?

Yeah, I know!

If you don't know what it means, you probably don't need it to be honest!

Not having it basically means you can only make out-going connections.  For looking at content on a website that our glorious overlords have decreed to be unpure and beyond the capacity of the puny mind of the plebian, it is perfectly fine.  You don't need anything more.

If however you use something like BitTorrent or a gaming server where people need to connect to you, then you need port forwarding to send the data from the VPN back to the program in question. It basically allows a controlled incoming connection. (Torrent works without it, but badly).

Is torrenting still widely used?

I may have used it to help myself to music beyond my monthly bandcamp purchases budget in the past, but last time I looked there didn't seem to be many torrents up for the equivalent releases to what I used to get. I assumed that people have just moved past downloading music as most people seem to have a subscription service instead these days. Maybe that's unique to music whereas for TV/film you need multiple subscriptions.

Also found it harder to search for torrents last time I tried - pirate proxy etc were just full of annoying popup links.

There are legitimate uses for torrenting.  Plenty of websites offer torrent as a download option, particularly if they're large files like Linux distro ISOs.
