Looking for something 40 to 42 I think, would probably like Smart, though I guess it's easy enough to add that on (and we have an XBox, which is what's prompting the purchase so we can multiplayer Minecraft 😉 - though no ITVPlayer on that), so probably not worth paying lots more. Not wanting to pay too much - preferably <£300, though might stretch to £400.

What's hot, who has good deals? (yes I know it's probably an FAQ, but didn't spot anything recent, and not sure what's good in the sales).

Very pleased with our new Sony, bought from John Lewis who do 5 year warranty on all tv's.

In typical stw style, it's just above your intended price range, link: Sony telly

We recently bought a Sony too, buggered if I can remember the model number but it looks exactly the same as the one Tom linked. And we bought it from John Lewis as well !

Very pleased with it. I've wall mounted it with a cheapie mount from ebay that gets it right up against the wall. The expensive one in JL was not so good. And the included one although quite clever (the same piece acts as either wall mount or table top stand) gets the TV miles off the wall.

(In the true STW spirit of recommending what you just bought, no idea if it's refresh rate is gaming suitable as I purchased purely on picture quality and smart connectivity)

JL in the first reply 🙄

Get one of those Blaupunkt from Tesco for half the price, they probably come out the same factory.

I got a 50" for £300 and it's excellent. Just add a dongle to make it instantly smarter than most built in versions.

Thanks - was just going to ask if they were likely to be any good. Extremely tempting at that price given the decent reviews. At the moment Tesco also appear to be providing the 5yr guarantee which seems to be the main reason people usually recommend JL

My wife works for Waitrose, we get staff discount in JL 🙂

And "probably" ? The same way that all carbon frames "probably" come from a single factory, to a single level of quality ?

Go and see some TVs in real life. I was all set to buy a Samsung based on spec but preferred the Sony when it came to it.

A £350 repair bill for a new screen at 14 months old is perfectly acceptable according to Samsung.
And not uncommon according to their appointed repair agent.
If you must buy Samsung, buy it from John Lewis.

If you must buy a 'Smart TV' then the most recent LG's and Panasonics interface are supposed to be among the best currently.

I'd be more swayed to getting a dumb tv and a box such as Roku/Now TV or the recent Amazon Fire TV(which are more likely to receive regular updates).

Ma & Pa have just bought a new Sony TV from Tesco ,Picture is great the sound is a bit mleh(and the reviews stated it had decent sound, compared to my older Panasonic it is quite weak) certainly the kind of TV that would benefit from a soundbar.
