I will admit to being a telly avoider....most we watch is news/sport and the odd thing less than a few hrs a week watching, out current telly is 20 yrs old one speaker and works fine but withthe digi switch thing we thought it was time to upgrade, so can people recommend a decent flat screen thing that will last us a few years. Budget is £500 but cheaper is better, given that it is winter olympics and world cup next year it will get more use.
Not bother with sky either.... grumble
edit do not need a big 40 whatever size screen either...cheers
Last month I got an 'LG 32LF7700 LCD HD 1080p Digital Television, 32 Inch with Built-in freesat'. Can't fault it.
I got it from Jonh Lewis online - £450 including free home cinema system with DVD HD upscaler. Sadly it's out of stock now. Beauty of the John Lewis deal was that it came with a free 5 year guarantee.
Currys were also doing a similar deal but without the 5 year waranty.
I looked at a lot of the Samsung TVs too but nearly every review I read said they were all let down by poor sound.
Probably a Samsung will fit the bill for your circumstances. But at £500 (dependant on size required) most makes will be available - the Panasonic stuff is good.
Get one with built in Freeview though so you have a wider choice of (free obviously) channels.
its worth bearing in mind that if you don't need a massive screen you can get away with a good LCD monitor!
I have BT Vision (which is not particularly wonderful, nor would I recommend it or BT) which outputs via HDMI, the monitor I use is an LG flatron L1960TR which is HDMI compliant (HDMI to DVI lead).
it does the job and the whole package cost peanuts! 🙂
Do Cotic make TVs?
I like Cotic.
Panasonic or Sony IMHO - I got a Panny LCD 8 Months ago and its great picture wise - a few minor annoyances with the GUI but otherwise very pleased with it - try posting on AVforums - you'll get loads of tech if you need it 😉
Cotic is good. Cotic is the way. Cotic is the LAW.
I recently bought a Panasonic Viera TX-P37X10B plasma. Its 37". Has 100hz (good for fast moving pics) and has a really good picture both normal def and HD. Only thing is its not full HD but I do have a blu ray player and the difference is amazing. Apparantly you are better off getting a good quality screen over a poorer one with full HD.
It seems to get good reviews and you can get them for below £500.
+1 for the Panasonic Viera TX-P37X10B. Stunning.
There's a load of techno-guff about this kind of thing but basically unless the screen is huge or you sit very close to it, your eyes cannot resolve the difference between 'FullHD' and 'HD Ready'.
We got our P37X10B for £475.
As Simon says the BluRay viewing on it is just amazing.
CRT is the way forward.
I'm telling you.
Listen to me.
CRT is the way forward.
In B&W obviously... 😉
Keeping an eye on this thread too, I (still) need a new telly after mine blew up a few weeks ago.
I bleddy luvz me 32" Bravia
Anything with the Samsung badge on the front, we've got 3 of them and they're great value units
hd????????????????????

cotic....at least i know that one
Samsung/sony/pany are all good screens, if it's price then there's a 42" lcd hitachi 1080p going in argos for £429.99 atm. 😉
