Looks like I'm finally going to have to join the world of satnav users, so looking for an app that I can put on the phone and which won't run through my entire data allowance in one journey.

What are people using at the moment?

Sygic? Just download the area you're likely to need.

CoPilot user here on Android... Very good, reasonably cheap. Maps on phone/sd card. And I've been able to transfer it as I get upgraded phones

Yeah, you need one with off line maps. Co-Pilot seems to be commonly recommended.
Sat nav doesn't use much data though....but suppose it depends on your allowance as to whether it's too much or not.

Google maps works fine for me and it's not that heavy a user of data. You can preload areas for use offline too. The integration with google now is cool, it pings me a message if traffic is bad enough for me to have to leave earlier for work.

I guess another benefit of on-board rather than on line mapping is that battery life will also improve.

for the car, navfree

for the bike, backcountry navigator (costs a few quid for the full version and detailed maps can use a lot of storage)

Get Nokia Here maps from the play store and download the UK map its free, once you done it doesn't use any data.

NavFree, much better than CoPilot for giving routes across country, instead of forcing you to use all A-roads and motorways. I've used both for some time, and I prefer NavFree.

Problem is, if you're somewhere with zero data, and you need to download new map info, you're stuffed.
I had that problem in South Devon, CoPilot couldn't give me a route to a place I wanted to go on Dartmoor, and I had no phone signal and no wifi.
Having a navigation app with all the map data native to the phone wins every time.

Another one for NavFree - not just for UK either, it took me all over the US, bits of Canada and Australia with maps downloaded in advance. We wouldn't have had a chance of downloading map data for huge chunks of that.

I've used navfree, and would use it again if I needed satnav some place where I couldn't get any data, but I've actually uninstalled it now and use google maps instead as the data usage isn't that high. Depends on your requirements.

I've used navfree whilst abroad and it's OK. It's not perfect, but good enough.
For me, one of the real benefits of a satnav is to get the traffic info, which you are not going to manage without some sort of data feed.
I use Waze most of the time, but I'm starting to look at google maps too.
