I'm not a fan of rum myself, but would like to buy a nice bottle for a friend's 40th. He loves rum. I've seen a few rum threads (ha) on here so I know there are some fans.

Budget £40+? (I have no idea what your £ gets for rum these days).

What would make you rum fans tumescent were you to unwrap a bottle of it this weekend? 🙂

Is that a good or a bad thing? 🙂

Mount Gay Extra

Ron Zacapa 23can be had for 45ish tis very nice!
Though I suspect he will have had all the above previously you could always try an obscure one, what that would be I have no idea! 😛

I bought a bottle of the Mount Gay on a PSA yesterday. Looking forward to trying it at the weekend (which may begin on a thursday this week... 🙂 .

I am not a rum drinker, so how should it be consumed ? straight, ice, mixer ?

the two best rums i liked, when i drank...

kraken

ron de jeremy

possibly ron is better, a bit smoother, kraken is darker and more spiced. but both are excellent.

Just not Bacardi - ever.

Havana Club for Cocktails

Mountgay on its own.

visited this place in the BVIs once - and their stuff was rather good.

As is....nowt!
Though if you have to 1, just 1 mind, chunk of ice to cool but it does subdue the flavour alittle 😉

Ice is for Americans and for Cocktails.

Chills the tongue, reduces the flavour.

How about a rum subscription for a rum fan? Was intrigued by this bloke telling me about his startup business, cos didn't think rum was that popular outside the Navel (Naval?) community. How wrong I was.

you will not go wrong with the diplimatico (i would have suggested that or an angoustora)
nothing worse than “ooh you like rum don’t you” and out comes the spiced rubbish or rough navy rum the colour of treacle.

Mount Gay Black Label is my favourite. A little bit vanillery without being spiced.

And one cube of ice in summer, none in winter.

Kraken for a 'session' rum 😯

An ex-girlfriend of mine regularly sails to South America with a boat full of beer, red wine and olive oil. She then sales back with a boat full of rum.

She's amazing, the rum is delicious:

Bit pricey mind.

Mount Gay XO.

However, if you're buying it for an ice'n'slicer, or one who mixes it with anything, Malibu.

the appletons reserve (12y ?) (jamaica) is a good one, as others have said neat is the way to drink it, but i prefer it as a single shot, ice and coke.
brings me round after too many beers

I would second the Ron De Jeremy

Met a cardboard cutout of him at Rumfest once. He was there on the other day...

Out of all the rums on offer we decided it was up there with the nicest, and we did our level best to sample all of them, as many times as we could.
My mate bought a bottle there and then, and promptly left it on the stall as we staggered off. Realised later on the bus/tube/train* somewhere. "did I actually buy a bottle of that rum?" "I'm not sure..." says we
Reciept in his pocket would indicate he had... 🙁

*unsure of exact method of arriving home

GF bought me a bottle for my birthday, and a sober tasting would indicate we were right.

@ian Mount Gay sponsor quite a few sailing events, their product is gleefully and gratefully consumed in a variety of ways 8)

Rum and coke with ice for me if Mount Gay. Personally I prefer flavoured rums, home made by the bar.

Speaking as someone who gets twitchy if I get whisky that isn't served in a Glencairn glass,

There are no doubt various theories as to how you should drink rum "properly," but as with any alcohol the correct answer is only ever "however you prefer to drink it."

Pussers Navy Rum makes my face go numb, which I like.
It takes nice too.

I have the remains of a bottle of Ron de Jeremy, very nice it is too. Woods and OVD make up the rest of my rums. The wife has a few different spiced.ones but I find them sickly.
A coupe of white rums too, Club Havana 3 year old and Ron Caney, which are both great compared to the tasteless Bacardi.

You're supposed to consume it orally not topically.

+1 for Diplomatico.

Hands down best dark rum for the money at around £40

Edit: This is not to be taken with Coke, at least not the black stuff 😯

Bit jealous of Iain C. Can only find the XO at £33 on Amazon? My local supply is £22...

By coincidence im off for a drink with my Jamaican friend tomorrow in a chilled R&B/Jazz bar. Last time around I introduced her to XO and she's hooked - sipping that neat in that environment having a chat is very cool.

Mount Gay XO currently on offer on Amazon!

i took advantage of this offer, but i think im just a rum (and whisky) heathen.....
bought two bottles and last night thought id do a taste test alongside my morgans spiced gold, and morgans dark rum. 3 glasses next to each other, randomly slurped throughout the evening, finally decided i preferred the spiced gold and didnt much care for the dark rum. the XO was just meh really.

in the end i took cougars advice ^^^ and decided that the best way to drink rum is however you enjoy it most and i er..... put some ice and coke in it 😳
