I need a bunch of rechargeable batteries for a couple of trailcams. They take 8 x AAs each so I need 24 batteries (8x in each plus 8x charging as trailcams are pretty remote so I can't pop out and and replace batteries as soon as they've charged).

I know not all rechargeable batteries are the same, but any recommendations for decent stuff that won't break the bank?

Oh, and here's a trailcam pic, cos everyone loves pics 😉

Panasonic Eneloop. They have low self-discharge, so good for something that will be sitting about for months. Also better than most rechargeables in low temperatures. I use them in my trailcams.

Presume I want the higher mAh versions (think they're 2500mAh from memory)? Bit spendy, but I guess you get what you pay for!

I had some Eneloop for a few years but when they started failing I changed to 7dayshop 2900s.

They last a long time and cheap at £20 for 16.

Eneloop Pro are more mAh, but not quite as good in terms of self-discharge. So if you want them to last several months, maybe better with regular Eneloop.

Also worth using a good charger, to get the best out of them.

I've got some eneloops and some amazon basics, I couldn't tell them apart in a taste test and they both seem to hold charge forever.

use an intelligent charger if you want to get the best out of them also.

The normal white 2000mah Eneloops. Get the pros (2500mah) if you want but they wont last as long and cost more.

They do a good intelligent charger too, I use a lot of rechargeables & the charger looks after the batteries a lot better than a "dumb" charger.

Yeah, I have the 7dayshop (well, branded Uniross but it's the same charger), it's a wee bit temperamental on the discharge/recharge mode but other'n that it's been fantastic, restored some old batteries to usefulness too

Just a follow up on this thread...

Had a crack with the 7dayshop high performance ones and they're crap! Their discharge rate is rubbish and they need charging after only a week or so of sitting on the shelf. The last set (of 8) didn't last a fortnight in the trailcam, took about 9 images and now 3 of the 8 cells are totally dead and charger won't recognise them.

Not impressed and they're going back. Got some Eneloop ones to try now. Buy cheap, buy twice and all that 🙁

Yep, I've given up on the 7 day shop batteries, they used to be good but most now fail within 10 or so recharges. Using a proper charger too.

I've had a duracell charger for years that takes

4xAAA or

4xAA

Or two of each

Or just two of the same size.

It seems fine, although I only use it for mouse, keyboard, beard trimmer so maybe not the most intense use and not the cheapest option when you cost in a couple extra duracell rechargeable cells, but I'm still on the original ones.. So I can't really fault them.

I've got eneloops paired up with a bc700 charger bought from 7days shop. It's been flawless combination for quite few years now. I'm about to buy more rechargeable batteries soon and probably will go either with eneloops or Fujitsu batteries as they seem to be the same-high quality made in Japan cells.

Vapex have worked well for me.

You want the "instant" for the low discharge type.

8 cells are totally dead and charger won’t recognise them.

Smart chargers can be too smart.  My Technoline quite often rejects batteries that have gone completely flat.

Stick them in a 'dumb' charger for 10 seconds and it will wake them up enough that the Smart charger can do it's job.  They seem fine afterwards.
