Morning all,

When building a site with Wordpress, are you supposed to optimise any images you add, or does WP do that automatically?

Obviously, I want any photographs I add to be as high in quality as possible, but I don't want to cripple the functionality of the site.

Wp generates a thumbnail and medium sized version of any uploaded images but it doesnt optimise. You can install plugins which will automatically do this though.

If like me you dont want a third party handling the compression use photoshop etc or an online service like kraken.io

I recently used a plugin called EWWW Image Optimizer that worked well to optimise a whole library of images (hundreds). Some images were 4mb+ etc, had been uploaded straight from smartphones etc

WP Smush is worth a look too.

If you install the Jetpack plugin, Photon will resize images for you automagically:
