Tender?

Bid?

Word of mouth?

Referral?

Sub-con?

Industrial contact - crony?

Providing services to main contractors' business ...

Advertising? Leaflets?

Marketing? Spam & junk mails?

Contractual obligation i.e. customers must engage with your company if they buy product X etc ... underhand tactics.

Outsource your sales & marketing?

Employ call centre ...

I was under the impression that the cold calling was done via a computer, and when you, as the victim, answered, if there wasn't anyone in their call centre to take your call, you'd get a silent line.

I could be wrong though.

^^

Cold calling refers to just calling someone up out of the blue and chancing it. I guess it could be linked to a computer dialling system but it doesnt have to be. eg someone calling you up and asking if you would like a time share in Iraq completely out of the blue even though you had never expressed any interest with them or someone they get information from about time shares in iraq.

the OP implies he's trying to buy soemthing from the company he's phoning though, not sell to them?

and yup, I assumed the OP is the one calling a company to buy something/service. Obviously they don't do business that way. Maybe it is based on poor track record of such enquiries actually resulting in sales or maybe they have a distributor/network that they have to use.

Cold calling is when a salesperson gets of his/her arse and wanders into a new customer's premises to sell them something/introduce them to their products. It's a quaint and apparently antiquated way of drumming up new business.

so my company doesn't speak to cold callers who are selling but we win new business if people call us out of the blue and ask us to sell them widget 'x'.

does that answer your question?

How do those people know that they should call you?

Surely everyone just dials random numbers until they happen upon one that's answered by a company that supplies what they are looking for?

or what chewkw sed.

or if you're brant you just post on stw a lot when you start your business 😉

Which bit of what chewkw said? Everything was covered
If I, as a salesman, are not permitted entry to see a customer, how do they win business?
They clearly can't cold call, can they?
A fair few of chewkw's suggestions require some degree or other of cold calling. It just seemed a bit funny to me.

you seem to be confused between them buying stuff and them selling stuff.

'Winning new business' is when they sell something not when they buy it.

They don't need you to cold call them for them to sell something?

'Winning new business' is when they sell something not when they buy it.

How can something so simple become so complicated??
And the irony is that for them to win new business they will at some point have to cold call!!! Ta Daaaaaaaaaaaaaa! 😀

err, no.

We've won lots of new business and haven't once cold called someone who hadn't previously contacted us.

Because they're responding to an advert maybe?

To a lesser degree that's cold calling.
I just don't agree with it, sorry.

I'm not sure whether you are supposed to agree or disagree with flippancy, it was a casual observation.
If your company has never made unsolicited contact with customers it is very unusual and very lucky.
😛

Depends on whether that's an advert or if you're prospecting... 😉
