amazing!! Was also fearing the worst during that spin!
Im guessing the feeling sat watching that must be akin (in a small way to folks watching the moon landings.

And yeah, great line before stepping off...

I think they thought it had.

Didn't everyone? My heart was in my mouth. I think I may have started welling up! Then he regained and the cheers started; pure elation.

I was thinking that about the only other thing I've been as tense about on telly / internet was watching the Chilean mine rescue to the end.

And now back to Strictly Results and Downton Abbey for a little relaxation...

I didn't realise the guy communicating with him was the previous record holder. Nice touch.

My wife (as he was nearing the ground) - "Oh good, there's a helicopter near him"

Me: "What do you think the TV pictures are coming from?" 🙄

My wife: "so did he break the speed of light?"
Me: "Sound dear, the speed of sound."

That is going to be a record that will stand until someone works out how to do a re-entry from a low earth orbit without a re-entry vehicle.

Would there be a sonic boom? I imagine the air was so thin there would not have been much of a pressure wave.

If the freefall record still stands, I'm just wondering if that was a deliberate ploy to let Kittenger keep the record, since they're mates?

If FB had a choice, that is...

I reckon his average velocity was too fast to safely beat the free fall time record.

People at work were talking about the sonic boom damaging his hearing

POSTED 48 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

There wasn't a sonic boom cos technically he didn't break the speed of sound at the altitude he was at.

Then my Internet connection went tits up and buffered for 4mins. Next thing I know he's got the 'chute open.

Depends. What altitude is your chair currently at?

The speed of sound in air is dependent on the air temperature, the colder it gets the slower the speed of sound. The air pressure has virtually no effect. At the height he jumped the temperature was only a few degrees below freezing so the speed of sound would have been about 60mph below the figure that is normally quoted 768mph (20degC at sea level). It will be interesting to see which figure they use.

His unofficial speed is being reported as 706mph.

The image of him dropping from the capsule will stay with me forever. Amazing!!

I was around my parent's house for dinner and I honestly don't think there has ever been a time when we all gathered around a tv/computer all hooked on a particular event. I guess I got to know a little of the excitement of watching/listening to the first moon landings live.

I found it quite exciting also. I always found the footage of Joe Kittinger jumping into the blackness quite haunting. I am always amazed by how easy it is to travel 30 miles on the surface of the Earth, yet such a great effort is required to travel that far vertically.

Absolutely, I watched it with the missus and when he jumped we grabbed each other. It may have looked easy but there were so many different ways this guy could have died.

Cheers lad!

The numbers

Exit Height 128,100 feet

velocity 833.9 mph or Mach 1.24

Freefall duration 4.20 sec

Freefall Distance 119,846 feet

+1 impressed

google says mach 1.24 = 943.896743 mph ?

The issue for me wasn't whether a sonic boom would be created (although that is interesting and not something I considered) but that a sonic boom is created at the moment something breaks the speed of sound barrier, so surely even if a) there was one and b) there wasn't any sound proofing/protection in his helmet he still wouldn't be able to hear it, because he'd be travelling faster than the soundwaves he was creating?

Pepared for physics fail!

I remember him saying that when he jumped, because there is no wind noise and everything is so far away that it doesn't change size, he wasn't sure if he was actually moving or just hanging there!!

weird that he couldn't feel a lot - because of the pressure suit.

It is at 20degC. As said above at his altitude it would have been a few degrees below freezing and the speed of sound would be around 700mph.

Edit: 672.5mph it seems.
