That is going to be a record that will stand until someone works out how to do a re-entry from a low earth orbit without a re-entry vehicle.

Would there be a sonic boom? I imagine the air was so thin there would not have been much of a pressure wave.

If the freefall record still stands, I'm just wondering if that was a deliberate ploy to let Kittenger keep the record, since they're mates?

My Palms have only just dried out!!!! Cant wait for the documentary. Amazing to see him land safely too!

The speed of sound in air is dependent on the air temperature, the colder it gets the slower the speed of sound. The air pressure has virtually no effect. At the height he jumped the temperature was only a few degrees below freezing so the speed of sound would have been about 60mph below the figure that is normally quoted 768mph (20degC at sea level). It will be interesting to see which figure they use.

His unofficial speed is being reported as 706mph.

The image of him dropping from the capsule will stay with me forever. Amazing!!

I was around my parent's house for dinner and I honestly don't think there has ever been a time when we all gathered around a tv/computer all hooked on a particular event. I guess I got to know a little of the excitement of watching/listening to the first moon landings live.

I found it quite exciting also. I always found the footage of Joe Kittinger jumping into the blackness quite haunting. I am always amazed by how easy it is to travel 30 miles on the surface of the Earth, yet such a great effort is required to travel that far vertically.

Absolutely, I watched it with the missus and when he jumped we grabbed each other. It may have looked easy but there were so many different ways this guy could have died.

The issue for me wasn't whether a sonic boom would be created (although that is interesting and not something I considered) but that a sonic boom is created at the moment something breaks the speed of sound barrier, so surely even if a) there was one and b) there wasn't any sound proofing/protection in his helmet he still wouldn't be able to hear it, because he'd be travelling faster than the soundwaves he was creating?

It is at 20degC. As said above at his altitude it would have been a few degrees below freezing and the speed of sound would be around 700mph.

Edit: 672.5mph it seems.

Makes sense, didn't realise that it was changeable.
