Found this place yesterday in Oxford and am slightly obsessed. Contains lots of STW favourites, pocket knives, kitchen knives small axes, enamel stuff, shaving stuff, and lots of cool stationary, gardening stuff. If you are in Oxford it’s worth a look, right next to the covered market on the Boots side not the High street end. Finding a nice shop in Oxford is a rare thing.
It sounds all beard and braces, but there’s all sorts of nice house stuff as well. The main theme is hand made, with classic utilitarian brands. None of it looked particularly expensive.

Damn. I thought it was going to be about Gill & Co. But they shut in 2010.
Imagine a big version of the shop in the Four Candles sketch and that was Gills, in one of the highest rent areas of Oxford. Glorious. Being able to buy nails by weight or find just the kind of door latch you needed.
Looks like a ‘highly curated’ collection of artisanal artefacts for the discerning collector/IT manager/ECD enthusiast rather than like a hardware store from my youth.
Nonetheless a nice-looking place with nice thoughts.

Gill and co still going strong in Chipping Norton. I used to go to the Oxford one when I worked in ‘Four Eyes’ on Queen Street. Suitably grumpy old bloke harrumphing as I described the thing I was after. Great place.

I worked in Cornmarket for a couple of years, then St Clements for a few more so i knew the centre well. Even did a few years up Headington Hill at Pergamon.
That looks excellent, bookmarked for when I next need something about the house.
I enjoy buying mundane items that last a lifetime and do the job well.
Headington homewares is still going too. But small though. Sometimes a single sheet of wet n dry is all you need!

My mate destroyed the radiator in his land rover and needed to get back to Cornwall. Searched all local garages/repair places without any luck. Hafod had a single tin of radiator repair putty which after an hours work or so fixed the job well enough for him to drive home next day.
