that massive stand next to the start straight wasn't there when i went to the test event. the crosswind-induced stacks we saw will probably be absent, then!

So I have a question if anyone knows the answer. Are the gear ratios limited so everyone has the same ratio?
And agree with above the bikes look tiny 🙂

And the jumps look massive.

So, does anyone want to buy a Leatt?

It must be bloody intimidating coming up to the face of those jumps on a tiny, rigid little bike.

Hats off to them all.

No restriction on gear ratios. They use quite a bit bigger for SX than standard tracks and they tune it their own power / spinning ability

jedi's in france at the moment, he was asked by bbc but i think (going by his various updates) that he told em to bugger off and stop interrupting his riding 😀

14:58 - Mike Henson - But how do they work out the running order for the time trial you may well ask? Surely Great Britain's Shanaze Reade is at a disadvantage going third, with 13 riders following her and knowing the mark she has set? Well, that is decided by their standing in the rankings calculated by the UCI, the world cycling body. Reade's injury-interrupted season has seen her slip down the ladder, hence her starting third."

13:30 - Ed Leigh - She is fit, she has had no injuries this year and she has the power. The big question though is how she will respond to the pressure when racing."

Come on BBC - Shes either Fit or Injured which is it?

He'll be casing the garlic puree next. I'm sure Ed will explain what it means.

one step too far (sadly) for Joe Public judging from my cursory study.

We have a tv in the works canteen and as the office cycling expert (ie the bloke who's commuted occasionally on a bike) I've managed to get the multitude interested by the TdF / road race, and positively enthralled by the track - with several staying on last night to see Vic and Sir Chris.

But the BMX - personally I can see the sublime handling skills and huge sprint abilities, but to the untrained eye it's just 'grown ups on kids bikes' and has elicited more in the way of laughter than support so far.

What will it take for the average watcher to see it as a serious race?

Trying to like - I really am. But it's not doing anything for me. Just too x games and not very Olympics. Absolutely no logic to it I know but there it is.

Otherjon. You do realise this isn't the race? This just gets their start gate sorted for tomorrow. The racing ( 8 on track at a time) starts tomorrow.

Yes. It's not me that needs convincing, it's an observation based on the responses of my work colleagues as a cross section of the wider public.

I think bwaarp and Phil have it actually. The bikes look too small - 'kids bikes' was the comment. And (again speaking from the view of my colleagues reactions) while the event will be more exciting when the racing starts - as has already been seen during the primer segment shown on the beeb - the general opinion is exciting but not an olympic sport.

Most casual observers will never take it seriously as an 'adult' sport.

Shame really.

another question. Clearly track design is not fixed (I don't remember a tunnel in Beijing) but does it have to have certain sections?

It will be better once they add the windmill and all the other crazy golf favourites.

I think in terms of risk, competition and difficulty it's as much more of an Olympic sports than beach ball  It's about time some olympic sports carried a greater degree of risk.

Short, long or pure lottery on the fuse length in those pingpong balls?

Today was just the somewhat bland appetiser to the Olympic BMX event.

Tomorrow is when the good stuff starts (proper gate of 8 racing).
