re: Fake Steve Jobs article.
Surely they look further into the future than 9 months.
Which would mean that Steve Jobs was totally aware of what iPhone 5 would look like and that they planned a mini iPad (if one's coming).

I can't imagine that as soon as he was dead, everyone went "right - now he's gone we can go back to the early-mid nineties Apple that we've all missed so much"

The real problem apple now have is that they have pretty much got the smartphone right, so all they can do is tweak it, people are expecting innovation where its not really possible.

Smartphones are just going to keep getting more powerful and upping the storage, but innovation is required on the services they give access to know, not the phone itself.

They have got it 'right' only because no-one has yet had the vision to make something more 'right'.

re: Fake Steve Jobs article again.
He's also assuming that we know everything about the phone already from leaks.
We'll know if he's right in a few hours.

Interestingly the Apple store homepage is down as they are updating it. Wonder if it will be fixed by the end of the announcement?

@fisha - I am using desktop/laptop machines less and less, in fact for home computing probably less than once a week. The growth is all in mobile devices like phones and tablets. In any case the iMac, MacBook and MacMini are still way ahead of the competition.

We made the switch to Apple starting about 5 years ago, we see no reason at all to switch to something else for desktops, laptops etc. The competition isn't even close.

I find if I keep repeating myself I feel I have made the point more compelling 😳

Anyway, T-Mobile/Orange seemed very keen to get me onto a 4S last month making me think they've lost out on the bidding for iPhone 5's

🙄 they are the ones with 4G Everything Everywhere is T-Mobile/Orange

more likely they were pushing stock before everyone got wind of the update

Im pretty sure that the salepeople in the mobile phone shops would not have a clue just like the rest of us whether they would be stocking it.

If it's taller and no wider than the current one, I'm out - so far out that they can go and shove it up their bums

I just don't see why they can't make 2 sizes, one little (ie current) and one with about a 5 inch screen for super-wealthy old geezers like me with shit eyesight. Internals could be pretty much identical, so surely it's only down to the "box". I don't care if the screen has the same pixel count as the smaller one - I don't need resolution that means even a young kestrel can't see the pixels

I've been really looking forward to getting a 5, but really, that's it? I'll stick to my 4!

Well, thats that not bothering about then. I've researched my free 4S upgrade and with the 4S I'd get a free Samsung Chat. Its a Blackberry alike that only does calls and texts.

I think I'll go for the upgrade, dump the 4S in the classifieds and keep the simple Samsung.

So next thread - what phone for father of two with wife on maternity leave...?

I think I can now see why Apple got so angry with their recent legal battle
Nothing new here and nothing to tempt me away from a Galaxy S3 at much less cost

(I will wait and see how much it actually costs versus a 4G S3 too)

Yes. So angry that they won the case and were awarded damages.

How much less? Figures if you have them, please.*

How are you getting one for free? (honest Q) I've been with O2 for quite a while now, do I just ring up an ask for one?
I'll be needing the 64gb one, mind, my 32gb iP4 isn't big enough any more.

I'll be selling a very nice iP4...... 😉

On a serious note, I'm getting a 4s upgrade. Its the right size for my pocket (unlike the S3), does more than what I need and in 2 years when my contract ends I'll be bang in the firing line for tried and tested 4G handsets.

4G could have been the only attraction for me but its not country wide, I have wifi at both ends of work / home and won't be downloading movies and so forth while I'm on the go.

They are nifty devices, so if you're not bought into the Apple eco system, i.e have apps paid for, then the Nexus 7 will do just fine.

I'm not due an upgrade from my 4s until next year so this announcement doesn't really make much difference to me really.
But, while I'm not an apple fanboi, I do love my iPhone, size included, and have bought into a few accesories for it, so I'll be inerested to see how the backwards compatibility works for the connector as I will be looking to change my phone next year.

On the size thing, I've had a play with a friends S3 and I found it to be too big, yes the screen was nice and easy to read, but I would hate to have to carry one around in my pocket all the time, especially as I usually carry two phones - personal and work - and together they just wouldn't fit in one pocket!

Looks to be a similar size to my S2 which I've had no problems with. I'm currently in the "would like a bigger screen" camp, but that's only really for home use and everything's a compromise then. I had a brief look at a galaxy note recently and thought jesus that thing is enormous! Pretty sure the S3 is pocket size though. The cheaper tablets coming out might mean reasonable size phone + tablet is a better bet.

Yeah I know what you mean. But I only ever have 18month contracts so I went to sim only for a few months as I couldn't see the point in upgrading to a 4s from a 4. And being as the 5 is the same price as the 4s I'm glad i waited. It's only ever going to be incremental improvements wherever you go I suppose.

You realise the Nexus 7 is a tablet, not a phone (i.e. not something I was expecting the iPhone to compete with?)

Yeah that is absurdly large for my taste. If I mounted one of those on my bars it would act as a spoiler!
FWIW I quite like the size of my current iPhone. Any bigger feels a bit too cumbersome to me and wouldn't fit in my suit pocket.

Hopefully never. I don't really understand why folk like having apps running all the time on-screen, sucking the battery dry for no real reason.

It took me a while to get used to the size of the S2 and I do mostly use it with 2 hands, but I have stubby fingers. Speaking of which, the image from apple (think on the BBC site) claiming that the 5 was perfect for single hand use.... Hmm, you'd need the fing-longer 🙂

Still not quite getting where you people buy your clothes though. Ooompa-loompa land?

Will have to pocket a Note I think, cos I can't justify spending £300 or more on a tablet.

See that's a pain too. Makes it very difficult to text while driving.

Can you fit the S2 in the inside pocket of a suit jacket, without it looking like your packing heat?

I find it really helpful on my home screen to be able to turn wif/3g/gps & change the mode from silent to vibrate with one press & to access my music straight away. Having played with an iphone I'd find it really annoying to be have to faff around with menus to get these.

Huge Apple fan here, but I'm waiting for the new Nokias to become available - they look much more interesting. iPhone 5 seems very much like the 4s which was very much like the 4, which was quite cool when it came out, but everyone has caught up now (and even passed them).

Blimey. I think the iPad is amazing. In fact that's exactly what I'm replying on right now.

My home computer use is now roughly 60% iPad, 38% iPhone, 2% "real" computer (Windows/Linux PC, laptop or netbook).

What did you find so objectionable?
