Ok. It’s the moment you have all been waiting for!

Apple Fanbois Ready!

Apple Haterz Ready!

Start your engines!

*bunfight*

Right, now that’s out the way, later today there is going to be a new iPhone announced, with the possibilty of a 7” iPad as well, even tho a dual launch with the MBP 13” Retina in October seems a more likely scenario there.

Going back to the iPhone, it looks likely that iOS 6 will also be released, or at the very least the final version will be previewed. Personally, I am hoping for a redesign, as the current UI is starting to look staler than an Android vs iOS argument.

For those interested, the announcements start at 18:00 UK time, and can usually be followed on Ars Technica, The Verge etc. Of course, for those who are not interested, feel free to post to tell me as much....or go read a book or....ok, ok...who am I kidding! Post away.

p.s I don’t think it will run flash, Darcy.

Jeez if we need a PSA on this then some folk must be doing a better job than most in avoiding the national press.

Next it'll be PSA, Friday come after Thursday and don't forget to shake before you zip

Hopefully they will finally implement flash. It's an outrage that they haven't already.

Edit, oh damn you pre-empted me.

@bigG

I think the use of the PSA, through overuse, has long been devalued as a means to point out an event many will not be aware of. As such, it has been used in this instance purely as a 'trope' to indicate an upcoming event, as opposed to the need to make those, who may not otherwise be aware, aware of said event.

I love days like today.

I'm totally an Apple fan boy but I only buy what I can afford.

Cup of tea, a bourbon and the verge on my 15.4 retina MacBook pro 🙂

Would be nice to see something fresh but I wouldn't expect any radical changes. The iOS 6 betas have been with developers for a while and there is no talk of any big UI change.

I think we'll continue to get the same 4x4+1 grid of icons, though obviously a lot of the in-built apps are going to change or get refreshed and there will be OS level facebook integration which will be good (for me anyway). Be nice to see some improvements to the Notification Centre too.

Ahh good. I've never done it before but I shall be getting my hands on an iP5 as soon as I possibly can. 🙂

I seem to remember in previous years that some places had queues outside whilst others you could just walk into or order online with no fuss at all. Where's best?

I'm currently close to getting a galaxy S3. been waiting to see what today brings before I make the switch. TBH it would have to be pretty impressive to make me get a new iPhone, the price is a big factor for me this year...

OS level facebook integration

*shudders*

I guess that will have to be the payoff for getting tab syncing via iCloud in iOS 6.

Where's best?

Hard to tell really. Last year, for the 4S, my bro-in-law said all the big stores in Sheffield were rammed, yet he just walked to one of the smaller kiosk-ish Carphone Warehouses and picked one up.

Depending on who you're contracted with/or going with, might be worth getting it direct from O2 etc, as they usually ship next day.

I phoned O2 and had one in my hand 24hrs later. I'll do the same this time.

Depends on whether you want contract or not. Tesco has historically been good for contract phones. I'm with Three on the one plan because I use it for work and use a lot of data on it.

I'd get an iPhone if I could figure out a way of controlling notifications on a per email account basis like I can on Android/Gmail.

Yeah, I seem to remember that. I'm on O2 now but I've been thinking of switching. Only problem with that is Orange 24 month contracts and O2s rubbish data allowance....

I'm interested in it. Not sure about the taller version personally just yet, although I do like the wife's iP4S. I agree with the comments that the OS is looking a little stale in some places.

As for other things ... I'd like to see an updated iMac ( and mac mini ), its long overdue.

Just set whichever one you don't want to be notified about to Manual Pull, instead of Push or Polling.

That way it will only check for new mail on that account when you open the Mail app.

lots and lots of people stuck mid contract with a 4S though this time? been sub 1 year since the 4S released

sim free, preordered from Apple and delivered launch day morning is the way to go

Yeah it'll be interesting to see how they handle that. Don't want to see iPhone getting into Android style fragmentation with multiple different resolutions to support.

Plus it means I'll have to wait for new waterproof cases to come out before I can mount a 5 on my bike, as I do with my 4 now.

The new one looks dull to me - and I've always bought apple products.

This time round I recon I'll go for the Nokia lumia 820 - it's got a better form factor ( I don't want a massive phone), will cost a lot less and will still work with iTunes. Having looked at the apps for WinPho there's not a lot missing for the things I use and best of all it will have nokia's hardware know-how - they have always made phones that get a good signal where other handsets struggle.

Apple need to pull up their socks - the new one looks like the 4s and the 4, so as others have already said, what has Jony Ive been doing for the last 2 years?

This. Although I have a free handset upgrade to a 4S, and the current "news" re 4G (ie the Iphone 5 might not support UK4G this year)may mean I take a 2 year upgrade to a 4S.

But as I'm TMobile, I guess the 4G phones EE have announced are worth a look. On the other hand though, I have WiFi at work/ home so do I really need to download stuff as fast as 4G might while I'm on the go probably not...

today I will find out whether I regret having bought a Samsung Galaxy Nexus back in January.
I picked up my old iPhone today and was amazed at how crap it felt to use, so unless changes are radical, I don't think there'll be any regrets.

I know what you mean. The rumours say it'll have a new connector which will render my iPod dock useless and also the 2 new USB cables I bought 2 months ago! Bugger.

You haven't seen the new one yet - just various rumours of what it might look like. Don't believe for a minute that the image above ^^^^ is real.

Rumours of it going back to the curved back this time too.

I'm tempted . My 4 is due for an upgrade so I've been hanging on to see what the 5 looks like before making a decision. We'll see...

I think there is a bit of a limit to what you can do to the design without it becoming "something else" instead of an iPhone.

It might not be radically different but there are a few obvious changes: taller, thinner, bigger screen, bigger speaker+mic, smaller dock connector, headphone socket moved to bottom, new back.

Law of diminishing returns really. All phones are much of a muchness now, with similar features etc. I would say the new Nokias are the main innovators in hardware at the mo.

The 5 will look like the 4 but taller.

I moved to an S3 because I was sick of ios and how boring it is. I love the s3 and the screen blows the retina 4s out of the water.

For me it's more about everything working together though, and for me that's what apple does so well.

Really Nokia? I wouldn't buy a phone when there is a massive potential they won't be able support it if/when they go bust.

Nokia are in a bad place and dropped Symbian (their own operating system) to go windows phone. Lots of unhappy Symbian owners!

Nokia can't keep up anymore not only with Apple but Samsung too. If you don't go Apple it has to be a Samsung Galaxy.

Really Nokia?

I said the hardware was nice, everything else is a cluster****, unless MS can polish WinOS a bit more.

I agree with that the lumia models are pretty. I just don't see how they can get the market share they need to compete.

I actually really like the windows phone software but it doesn't have the eBay etc support/functionality I need.

At least Android has pretty much every app that iOS does.

Way better not to GAS about this kind of thing. No point getting worked up and paying out your dosh on what's usually just an incremental change.

The case makers prototype was the iPhone 4s but taller. They usually get it pretty right.

It won't look anything like the pics above.
