Humble are giving away an old X-COM game (UFO Defence):

https://www.humblebundle.com/store/xcom-ufo-defense-free-game

And GOG have Constructor for free (I believe it's to promote a forthcoming remake):

https://www.gog.com/game/constructor

No idea if either or any good but, hey, free right? (-: Both offers expire at some point tomorrow so get your skates on.

X-COM game (UFO Defence) = UFO - Enemy Unknown = Best. DOS. Game. Ever.

Surprised you've never played the first one before! Although it was known as UFO: Enemy Unknown in the UK, which is a much cooler name.

Spent an entire summer holiday playing it once when I was 14. Awesome game, one of my all time faves. Love the graphics style (the intro is great!) I'd definitely recommend the new-ish remake (XCom) which is available on iPad, PC, Xbox, etc; they've successfully streamlined the more tedious/fiddly bits whilst retaining the core nerdy awesomeness.

Aha! That'd be why I'd never heard of it.

I've played a couple of the X-COM games but there were so many and it was such a long time ago that I can't remember which. I did have a play-by-email X-COM, which was great until they turned the bloody servers off.

I was much more of a Laser Squad fan myself. Poured hours into that on a mate's CPC-464 (when I was at University *cough*).

Laser Squad is a stone-cold classic, it was by the same guy (as were the earlier Rebelstar games on the Speccy). A quick google says he has a new game on the boil which could be interesting!

Aye, Julian Gollop. Also responsible for Chaos on the Speccy.

Rebelstar 2! ZOMFG. I remember getting that running on an emulator a few years back and apart from the klanky interface it was still brilliant. We got it on a cover tape from your sinclair or something with no real instructions and basically decoded it 😆

I got the Chaos Reborn reboot for Chaos a while back, didn't play it that much but it seems to mostly miss what made Chaos so great. "Let's take this stripped-to-the-bone arena match and fill it with bloat!"

Flipping eck this takes me back. Loved Laser Squad on the Speccy and then UFO on the Amiga. Brilliant. 😀
