so i am contemplating picking up a 2nd hand ps3, can i stick a different hard drive in it?
if so what do i need?

yes, extremely easily. you just undo a couple of screws, the old one slots out and the new one slots in. 5 minute job.

Just a 2.5" hard drive,I recommend a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 5400RPM (WD3200BPVT) and a USB flash pen formatted to FAT32 file system to backup your saves etc if that is a requirement.
