No, the PS3 has it's own operating system different from Windows, MAC etc so you won't get a virus.

Only if some sad pathetic excusse for a human being decides they have nothing better to do one day and program one. But what's it going to infect anyway ? The PS3's systems are more secure than anything - hence why after 3 years it still hasn't been hacked.

Anyone upgraded their PS3?

I have just ordered a 320gb harddrive and a wireless keyboard and now gonna research which linux is best for the PS3!!!

Any trials and tribulations yet?

Presume you have the "fat" ps3?

Upgraded my ps3 to 320 2 years ago, took a risk and bought a 7200, which runs quite a bit hotter than the standard 60gb 5900 (i think the speed was).

It has frozen 3x, it's high up in the room and if the missus has the fire and heating on you can here the fan kick in.

Be very very careful with the bolts holding the cage in, I ended up using pliars to remove one as the metal is very very soft and easy to round.

The actual swop out takes 2-3 minutes inc the pesky bolts - make the back up shorter by deleting as much stuff as you can beforehand (d/led demos etc).

I had looked at getting linux onto it - but tbh I'm not that fussed on that side of things and with the slim other OS support it'll slowly die out over the next few years anyways (not that it was massive).

As others have said possible but currently no viruses that I know of.

As for upgrading your HD they don't recommended going any faster than 5900 as apparently they can cause overheating. Mate upgraded his took him on time at all reckons it was dead easy.

Definitely won't get a virus. I thought about the yellow dog install and decided that other than doing it for something to do it was quite pointless if you already have a PC or Mac.

The PS3 only has 256Mb of Ram so you can't run much in Yellow dog compared to a modern home PC/Mac system before that becomes a problem. Fine if you have several PS3's to cluster together for a specific task though...

(Currently) Can't get a virus.

I upgraded from a (2.5” SATA HDD) 60Gb to a 320Gb one.

Very easy to do:
