Sorry about the overly dadsnet question...

Disclaimer: Potentially mature themes may follow (although no more unsuitable for yoofs than a year 8 biology class)

Given that the health of your little swimmers owes a lot to your own wellbeing - did many Dads on here change things when trying to get pregnant? I'm thinking more exercise, no booze, better eating, that kinda thing.

What I really want to know is: if you did change something, was it a long build-up, did you stop drinking for 3 months before you really started trying? Or did you just stop one day and get on with attempts at the same time?

This is a genuine question - so while I'm expecting a few of a certain type of reply - please can we be a tiny bit serious too? I'd love to get a few real answers before you all get my thread closed. Ta!

for the first one id been hitting my usual healthy targets of getting very pissed and stoned most weekends, even his conception was lubricated by guiness on a boozy week in dublin 😳 do cycle every day though
which may have helped as kimbers jr came out perfect

ive knocked all that on the head and wouldnt start it up again when we start trying for his bro/sis

Good diet, cut down on booze (though the spermologist told me that a small amount of booze doesn't really matter...in her words: "Look how many people get pregnant when they're drunk". Most importantly, cut out the fags (if you smoke).

For us getting lucky was a bit of a slog . We both cut back or off the booze. Also i believe my soldiers had a big hit from a bout of illness so took a while to conceive. 10 months later we have a lovely poo monster of our very own.

I do believe healthy lifestyle and temperance played a big role .

the spermologist told me...

That sounds like the start of a joke! I can't decide if I think having "spermologist" on your business card would be a good thing or a bad thing...

I don't smoke, but the main cause of my concern is that I do drink quite a lot... And I've no idea how long the effect of booze can last...

(I'm also not really ready to go to the docs to chat about this kind of thing - so given the number of baby threads on here figured you're all a pretty good source of advice...)

Excellent. Best word of the day.

I [s]hoped[/s] knew we tolerated DD for something.
Good one.

Then drink less.

No preparation whatsoever - in fact, Pie Jnr was conceived as a result of an unusually hedonistic 4 day long bender featuring a large variety and sizeable quantity of intoxicants. I've mostly knocked all that on the head now though (mostly.....).

He's very healthy BTW, was a shade under 10lbs at birth and, at 16 months, is developing nicely. He's got a mahoooosive gut though, just like his old man.

Unless you have been trying for ages without success, I wouldn't worry too much about changing your lifestyle (unless it's one long series of benders).

Just get busy!

I did the usual excesses and had poor quality sperm <10% good ones (normal is about 15/20% IIRC).

I stopped drinking completely, changed diet, got more healthy in every way.

When I was tested again it was identical count.

Ended up going through IVF.

I just stopped having any "quality alone time" for a week or two to.. err.. get the pressure back up a bit.

Mrs took things a lot more seriously: Folic Acid supplements for a couple of months prior, low sugar diet etc but she is a diabetic (and a doctor) so she was keen to minimise the risks.

We conceived without really trying - which was disappointing (I was looking forward to trying more) but also made me very glad we'd spent all those years using contraception!

The "oh, she's taking her temperature again, 'spose I better prepare myself"

🙂 - T-shirt, and good conduct medal for me on that one

I think she made me start wearing boxers too

Yeah, but the other little people are little scrotes, whereas all my progeny are (and will be) the perfectly well-mannered geniuses and future leaders that mankind will need in its coming battle for survival.

And DD - if you think you'll need IVF I would suggest you get seen sooner rather than later - it's one of the first services that will be cut on the NHS - some PCTs don't offer it, some have reduced the service and I am sure more will follow.

And at circa. £5k a shot it ain't cheap.

Not 'arf - stopped taking precautions; 35 weeks and a day later the triplets arrived.

I guess its one of those things you dont know if you can have kids until you get going.
I wondered if all the riding-racing I'd done over the years would have knackered my knackers.
Fortunatley it happened quick with both kids, good and bad because I was enjoying the trying part.
In terms of good things I was fit both times kept riding the same.
The days of big drinking each weekend were a distant memory and so were Flite saddles.
I was fit had BG saddles on all bikes and was drinking in moderation but all of that was not with a baby in mind.
The Mrs was doing the Folic acid thing too which can only help you with having a healthy baby.
All my riding mates have had kids without trouble and they are all racers- fairly H-core riders of sorts so riding bikes cant be too damaging.
I must admit I know a few non cyclists carrying a bit of timber smoking and drinking heavy and it aint happening for them so just shows you the drink and the smokes can nail your swimmers...

Moderation I reckon..

Gave up the booze. Managed two "golden shots" though so was back in the pub within a week both times. 😀

One of my small claims to fame. When we were having trouble conceiving number 2 we went thru a number of tests and I set a record high score for sperm count. Not sure what they were counting but it put a spring in my step 8)

We have relatives who have spent 3 years trying, and were on verge of IVF. He stopped smoking 2.5 years ago, and 10 months ago they both cut out the booze almost completely. She is due in Feb. They are both convinced that the booze / he being somewhat overweight did not help.

Contrarily, mrs_oab and I seem to have a one-shot success rate, snippage was done asap after birth of mini_oab no. 3....

"spermologist" 😆

I had a very high count, they were just ****less. Sperm count means nothing. Sorry.

😉

And as to riding - amongst the guys I ride with (well used to) about 15/20% have had problems conceiving. Purely anecdotal I know but there you go.

POSTED 4 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

If you don't use it the quality reduces so cutting out on Madame Palm doesn't necessarily means better quality.

Well - anecdotally at least it appears that while I should probably cut out the booze when the time comes* I don't need to go teetotal just yet. We've been thinking of trying towards the end of the year - and I had a sudden worry that if it takes aaaaaages for the beer to stop having an effect on quality then maybe I need to stop drinking altogether right now... I'll go for moderation instead...

Some of the stories up there are pretty good by the way... I like "golden shots" - quality expression...

*so to speak

All this appears to be a bit odd to me.

Basically peole are saying that they know they are not doing themselves any good, but thats ok, but they just want to produce a healthy kid so will stop for 5 minutes... Why not drink less, stop smoking, exercise more etc etc for your OWN health benefit?

Oh and the best way to get preggers... try not to think about it too much Mrs FD and I 'tried' for a few months with no joy, as soon as we stopped 'trying' she got preggers.

Looks like you need a biology class first - men don't get pregnant, women do.

Hope that helps you avoid disappointment.
