Just bought it, pick it up next week......so who's had one? What have I let myself into and I can't wait to pick her up! Always said I'd have a porsche by time I was 30 2 years late and it's now a new 911 but hey. Dreams and ambitions!

Anyone experience with one?

A guy at work got one. Great car and he used it to commute as it was plenty reliable apparently.

My Dad had a couple of these when I was a young. A 2.5 lux then a 3.0l S2 in Guards red. The S2 was great and felt bombproof. Proper old school Germanic build quality (more so than the new Boxster that replaced it, it also sounded better than the tinny flat 6). He let me drive it whem I was 17 (about a week after passing my test), I remember the PAS feeling heavier than the non power steering in the little tin box I normally drove. I saw it parked up about 7 years ago and it still looked immaculate.

S1 or S2? I nearly bought the latter many moons ago. I loved the look of it with its fat arches (for the time).

wolf in sheeps clothing at bit, weren't they? superficially similar to the 924 and pretty different in the result.

I nearly bought one (also 32, also always wanted a porsche). My wife insisted it had to have 5 doors so got a leon Cupra R instead. A little part of me died that day when a dream slipped out of my grasp. By the time I next have the money to buy a decent motor (and not need a sensible car) 924's, 944's, 928's and even 993's will be rare and too specialist for my pockets.

Enjoy it and know that I'm jealous

Had a 2.5 lux, S2 & a 924 turbo.

Bloody great cars & wish I'd never sold each one of them. Handle great and respond well to commitment in the bends. Being an older car they feel fast even when not really pushing on that much, but not really that fast on the scheme of things.

Would love another.

Hang on, is this right: you can get a 944 for about £5k??

Crikey. I never knew.

Mine was just over £2k and is mint. Insurance is £150 per year for me and hardupmum. It's a 2nd car to me as my everyday vehicle is a company VW t5 kombi. The itch is about to be scratched and I've always dreamt of a porker!

Enjoy it. My neighbour used to have one many years ago (he was Porsche IT manager), very nice looking cars and well made. Going for a drive in it will wipe away a frown and put a smile on your face.

That sounds very cheap unless it needed a load of work or you are just a jammy barsteward. 😉

I could have had an RX-7 turbo as my first car, but no, it wasn't sensible enough, so I ended up with a Rover 214. 😥
Stupid bitch, and she turned out to be a slag! I'll know next time to purchase first, answer questions later. 😆

It's was on for 3k and the guy seemed half desperate to sell and half understanding he'd over valued. It's an 87 2.5 lux with 177k miles they are cheap fun classics

Good cars, assuming you get one that doesn't have the pox from rust they are pretty solid and reliable.
I had a 993 for a few years and it was brilliant. I'm just rescratching the itch now and working on a 996 Turbo, that and the 4s are the only 996s worth having 😉

Thinking about one of these as a second car when I've rebuilt my savings from my impending purchase of a replacement first car.

There was a lovely looking 944 soft top on Autotrader recently for about £3k.

Hope it turns out to be everything you hoped for!

I had an early square dash 2.5 lux in silver with (super itchy) Berber tweed interior. Such a fun car to drive with 50/50 weight distribution and no PAS/ABS to dull the experience. Very tempted to get another!

I've got a 91 944 S2. It gets driven nearly every day. We will never get rid of it, it's part of the family now.

My cousin had one, spent all his money/time fixing it then rolled it down a 20ft bank into a pet shop...

Possibly a fair point, all things considered. Unless you had a money tree out back?

'Supplement' is the word you were looking for rather than 'replace'.

I've been looking at 944's recently and they can be bought dirt cheap. Saw a lovely one which was about £2.5k. 2.5lux, red, 87 plate - wonder if you bought the one I was looking at. Was it in coventry?

Please update when you get the car.

Now spent most of the morning on Autotrader.

Getting very tempted by some of the 15 year old 911s......

A friend of mine collects 356s, lovely things but I definitely can't afford to start down that road.

Been tempted by the 944 S2 a few times now! Quite cheap, but I expect parts could be expensive. Currently looking to buy either a mk2 Escort estate or a mk3 Cortina 🙂

So are parts expensive for the 944's?

Ive always loved them.

Are the bores not specially coated with something that makes them beyond economic repair if / when worn ?

How many miles can you get before that happens ?

Crikey. I never knew.

And if you shop round you can get a Porsche Boxster for between £3.5 & £4K.

Always been a big fan of 924/944/968 since I went for a spin in a ex-girlsfriends Dads car many years ago.

Love the clean lines of the early 924's especially when there dropped with tidy wheels like this

This 944 looks sweet too

I've found spares when looking on eBay etc pretty reasonable. Whole engine for £300 etc there seems to be a lot getting scrapped so second hand parts are freely available. Also bits fit across 924/944/968 too which helps. I'm sure something will cost a fair bit but all cars can cost a lot at some point .

Values should rise too over next few years. I think we are looking at a fair few years until Boxter values rise. Plus I needed a 4 sweater for me and the kids.

A few years ago ( 6 maybe less ?) I noticed that 993 ( 911's) at about £5K-£12K were really cheap and good buy if you were looking to get a Porsche.

Last Year I noticed that Targa's were cheap as some as low as 4K, and even told my brother to buy one ( as he has more spare cash than me )

Unfortunately I could not buy one at either time, check out the prices of 993's and especially Targa's they have shot up.

I see the same thing with 944's right now, they will shoot up in price, the cabriolets are already starting to command higher prices.

So I think not only have you bought yourself a really good car, it was also probably a good move financially, if it is a good un.

Funnily enough I have spent the last 4 weeks looking at 944's as a mate over in OZ was giving a running commentary on facebook about 924 he had bought as is fixing up.

I wish you many a happy drive 🙂

I had an '87 turbo, the 220 Bhp model, but up rated to a stage 2 kit with about 280 hp - about the best you could expect without upgrading the turbo and ecu (£££). Brilliant car. I ran it as an all year round daily runner for 5 yrs and it was perfect. Took it on about 3 track days a year and it was great fun there. Proper old school fun. A bit un-refined compared to modern cars but that added to its appeal - proper raw drivers car. But was far more refined and better in many ways to the 911s of that era, though I would still love an old school 911. The N/a cars are not blisteringly fast compared to modern hot hatches (neither is the turbo) but they drive so much better. Nicely weighted steering (some would say heavy by modern standards) but very communicative, and proper brakes you can modulate unlike modern cars over-servo'd 'digital' brakes. I miss her! Basically the cars are very cheap to run sharing a lot of VAG parts so still readily available. Cheap maintenance plus an allowance for parts replacement due to the age of the car. Bodywork is good as they had fully galvanised bodies. Turbos and S2s had plastic trims under the sills and front wheel arched that collected moisture and could cause rust, but other models didn't have them and are usually rust free in those areas. 968's are nice but just overpriced and face lifted 944 S2's. One of Porsche's most underrated and overlooked cars.

So, I have collected her! Drove her back from Manchester to Newcastle with a big old grin. Super fun so far. Couple of "quirks" to sort out but all in all happy. Now need to wash her and wait for a sunny day to enjoy her on a set of country lanes.

Thanks for all the info and thoughts about them!

Get in inside sills checked, as they are notorious for rust here, if you open both boors there are plastic vents that can be removed. Shine a torch down, or if you can see the road get shot.

Also get over to the porsche club gb forum, they may know this car.

Here's mine

Looks great. They're lovely cars, one of Porsches most underrated cars. The sill corrosion issue is not so prevelant on the Lux's as it is on the S2's and Turbo's. The S2's and Turbo's have the under sill (and wing) plastic trims that seem to be the main cause for corrosion. Still worth checking out anyway, as the corrosion acts from the inside out so not always visible from the outside until its too late, and get some Waxoil or similar sprayed in there anyway as a preventative measure.

Its worth joining the Porsche Owners Club as you get a discount for parts at the main Porsche dealers and some classic car insurance policies. It may sound odd but for the vast majority of parts when I had my turbo, the Porsche dealership in Nottingham was by far the most competitive on price for new parts, and they got to know me in there so would always cut me a decent deal (most of my parts buying was for restoration/preventative maintenance). Alot of the ebay and other aftermarket suppliers don't provide original parts and they can be more expensive than the dealer.

The cylinder bores were not coated, but were treated from the raw aluminium block. It is basically an etching process - the aluminium alloy the block was made from had a high silicone content, so the etching process exposed the silicon particles which creates a very hard wearing surface negating the need for complex and (at the time) unreliable cylinder liners - this was back in the day when all-alloy water-cooled engines were in their infancy. It is possible to get them repaired if there is light scoring - there are limits in the manual or the treatment re-applied if you re-bore the cylinders. There are also a handful of specialists out there who have developed lining methods to re-line the bores. The engines are pretty robust though and scoring tends to happen if debris gets into the cylinder (classic culprit was an exploding turbo), after 100k miles the bores in my car's engines were spotless and the compression test results were basically near as damn it 'as new'. Enjoy.
