I went with plusnet for broadband and line rental in feb.cos they seem nice. Plusnet value, 8meg, the guy I talked to and agreed my contract with said "a minimum of 4-5meg connection speed" which I was happy to agree to. Yeas. Here's my details.

I never got above 3-500k download speed. so they sent a bt engineer round, he got a 3meg connection on his equipment, so no prob with the line going into the wall.

so they sent me another "test" router, which connected at 3meg for one night only. then it never connected, and when it did , it was 200-300k.

another BT engineer came today. His equipment says my line at the wall is fine 3-4meg, and 4 meg at the green box outside.

but the 2 routers they sent me won't connect higher than about 300k.

crap equipment?

anyone had a prob with plusnet routers?. between me and 2 bt engineers, we've narrowed it down to the equipment plusnet are sending out. anyone else had a problem? it's doing my head in a touch!

The value service is subject to some seriously poor contention ratios.

Generally they don't set limits of down/uploading, they let the poor line speed do that for them.

Not impressed with the broadband here in Carmarthen. Just goes off when busy etc etc.

Have you asked Plusnet what IP profile you are on? They throttle your speed if you have been dropping connections constantly.

I had a recent phone line fault and when it was cleared after waiting a week for the BT engineer the download speed was very low, 128k. Plusnet told me I had to wait 1-3 days for it to resync and assuming no more drops occured. Anyway when it finally went back to full speed it was because they reset their profile, not BT as they told me on the phone, and only after hounding them on the phone and threating to raise a broadband fault.

Use the BT broadband checker, it'll tell you what to expect download speed to be.

Many routers have settings you can amend in them to enable them to match up with your local line speed/capability. MTU is one of them, forget the others.
I have a similar problem and have been trying to work out how to fix it, as i've changed all internal filters, cables, etc.

I'm on plusnet with one of their routers and one one of their 8meg packages.

Often I get 5-6meg. But varies - 1.8 at the moment.

About a mile to the local rural exchange, over old wires on telegraph posts. BT indicates I might get up to 5 meg but often do better.
