Hi everybody,
I need some help from someone who is living in London.
I just got an offer to work in on of the banks there and I was wondering how much i should be earning (Gross salary) to have a confortable life in London.
Thanks in advance
Cheers

Twice as much as they are offering you.

How long is a piece of string...

Really depends on your definition of comfortable?

If you want to live near the city, say Islington etc I'd say upwards of £60k if you're on your own.

it's entirely subjective, some more information would help:

Which part of town is said bank in?

What would you term comfortable living?

Typically you would be given "london weighting" over a normal salary of the same position outside of london, which equates about an extra £4k a year.

Depends on your lifestyle, where you're going to live, stuff like that.

Live in a cheap(er) area = more money for fun stuff. Live somewhere more nicerer = less money for fun stuff.

living in a cheaper area = long commute from central

depends where you live now & if commuting by public transport is doable/affordable.
I wouldn't go there for all the tea in China, but that's just me

Thanks guys, here is more info:

The bank that I will be working with is located in Harewood Avenue
London NW1 6AA. I hope that I can find a place to rent within 30 min from there. They offered me 60K Gross. so I don;t know if it is a good deal or not. For me confortable is to be able to go out once a week for a drink. During the week I will be spending most of the time at work.
To be able to travel twice a year.

cheers

On that salary you really ought to be able to live very comfortably indeed. If vou can't then shame on you! Seriously you'll be very comfortable on that package.

BNP Paribas then, not far from me (5 minutes walk)- You have a couple of options cheaper is Lisson Grove (bit rough but plenty of potential) or Marylebone for more expensive. Or look at places on the Jubilee Line/Bakerloo as they go to either Marylebone (around the corner from BNP) or Baker Street (5 Mins walk) - Or look outside of London and somewhere on the Chiltern Line (straight into Marylebone) and more riding on your doorstep

You also have one of the best fish and chip shops in London opposite BNP (The Seashell)

If you want more info on the area etc my emails in my profile

I earn rather less than that and live pretty comfortably in zone 2.

A quick look on rightmove shows you could live less than 10 mins walk from there, in a bloody expensive area, in a 1-bed place for £300/week or so. Commute from elsewhere and you'd get a load more space for your money.

Travelcard? Bike. £100 a month buys a decent (ish - not KoN decent) singlespeed / fixie over a year.

Amersham gets you onto the trails, and both the Chiltern Line and the Tube.

And how impressed they're going to be for your disclosure of potential earnings? Garfield has plenty of ways to describe your brightness.

SW Suburbs if you're on that money. Green spaces, parks, the river. Central London 20mins on tube or train. Super safe area and the chicks are hot 8)
