I still like this even though I (badly) metered it by eye in crappy light, then had to take a rough stab at the developing time after accidentally stopping the clock.

and a couple from pottering around town with the digi this afternoon. All linked from Insta, so excuse the lousy resolution.

They're really good Jeremy. Love the first two especially as they are just great 'moments' that belong to be captured and they are great captures of a moment that would not have lasted long.

The portrait is nicely lit and well balanced in B&W but I think you've used quite a wide angle lens perhaps? What was it, roughly 35mm equivalent? Her nose is pretty exagerated and it's not flattering her. That's not your fault obviously.

Wouldn't look out of place in a lifestyle magazine. Bear in mind that Eleanor is only 17 and on her second ever photoshoot!

Thanks for your comments Greg. I personally like the one with the girls as they look very happy and carefree!

Agree about the portrait - it was taken with a Fuji X100 which has a fixed 28mm so is obviously not the right kit for a flattering portrait 🙁 FWIW I was aiming for something else, but probably failed!

A phone photo thru the very dirty windows at Boggle Hole YHA. I'm quite pleased with it as the dust has added a mysterious feel to it.

It's 35mm equivalent, I think, but yes, that's wide enough to mean you're standing close enough to get distortion.

I don't claim to be a fantastic photographer, but this photo below makes me smile, and I was very happy with the outcome!

Story behind it - My much better half loves the film 'Pride and Prejudice'. Hence spending an evening up on Stanage Edge trying to recreate this shot from the film - (Keira Knightley by the way)

And this was our attempt, just taken on a iPhone

This. Times a MILLION. You can have the best equipment money can buy, and still be a terrible photographer. It is not about what camera you have, it's what you do with it.

Anyway, rant over. I've been learning how to process 35mm film in a dark room this week, and then scanning the negatives to import them into Lighroom.

Oh no need to apologise. It's a great shot; it honestly doesn't need the red picking out.

Thankyou so much for saying so. Genuinely it means a lot to get that kind of feedback. Not sure what clicked recently, whether it's just the effect of working with film and a very different camera but I feel like my 'colour palette' has developed recently.

A few more just because it's a Sunday morning.

Greg, I think it's those big blocks of primary colours, that really makes it stand out. It's a punchy, bold look, but I love it and it makes me want to stop and look, which in itself is a winning strategy.

The Hasselblad is certainly working it's magic. Are you using Kodak Portra 400 btw ? I've acquired a Bronica Zenza, so doing some research on film types.

Websites looking good as well. Not too fussy, crowded or difficult to navigate. All of which I hate with a passion. Nice and clean and simple, with the pictures being the focus, not the website.

Kiwijohn. I have a Fuji xf 35mm WR f2 lens on the X-pro1. Lovely lens, just need to save up for an 18mm to go with it.

I am indeed. I did try a few other colour emulsions recently including Kodak Ektar and Fuji Pro NS but they come out far too saturated for my liking.

Thanks TofD. The 23mm 1.4 is my prime of choice on my XT1.
I'm saving up for the 16mm 1.4, mainly for auroras.

Mrs Fiat snapped this as we drove across an intersection in San Francisco last month.

I can't even explain why I like this shot. It was taken quickly, on a compact (set to auto) on an overcast evening. I guess I like the big block of the tyre upfront with the chain stay blurring into the background.... 😐

A pretty mundane shot. But the 40 mins of searching and waiting in the local woodland to find this guy and then the 20/30 mins to get close enough to just take any shot makes it very satisfying photo for me.

Picked up an old film camera in a charity shop a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed the experience of film after years of digital. Scans are only low res unfortunately.

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

Any suggestions for a budget scanner, preferably one that can do 120 film as well would be appreciated. Rest of the photos including info about the camera can be found here.

TLR - does the Lecht still rock? Haven't seen a post by you since I sold my Nicolai and stopped frequenting the Nicolai forum. Hope all is well with you.

A few more from the 'Transition' project.

Geetee - I think you may be mistaking me for someone else. I've never been on the Nicolai forum!

But I'm very well anyway, thanks for asking.

How funny - there was a guy on there always went by the title 'The Lecht Rocks' and shortened it to TLR. I always thought you were the same person!

Nice to know you anyway, and love the picture of the stag.

Thought I would post this here as well (it's on the 'Portrait photography = blackmail thread also)

So I had a really interesting experience this week. We need photo's for our company website and my employer asked if I would take them. The owner of the company is also into photography in a significant way and specialises in studio lighting subjects; quite different to my style.

He has a very capable and expensive studio light set that I was able to work with. I've never used anything like this before and it was a fascinating experience that told me just how hard it is to get the lighting right. We were working in a very small space so the lights were very close to the subject so small movements in their placement relative to the lights were making a very big difference in the amount of light falling on them. Fascinating experience though the results aren't really up to par for use in a corporate website.

This is the best example.

[img] [/img]

This is not what I like to produce in terms of style and aesthetics, but I do like the warmth and engagement of his expression. For a 'corporate' shot I think would make us look more 'human' though I am not sure the owner wants to go with this style.

I've had a couple of goes in a studio now. It is much harder than YouTube makes it look! Plus the kit is always something different and you've go to figure it all out.

That said, I really enjoyed it. You can be as creative as you like with light, if you have the time to mess around.

Realised that hadn't really uploaded many (any!) photos from the last studio shoot, but rectified that now. I won't post them all here, but this is the album of studio photos on Flickr (one photo in the album is probably NSFW) https://www.flickr.com/photos/gingerfox/albums/72157671952111494

Thanks Greg! I found I was having the same problems as I see in your studio portrait i.e. light bleed from the overexposed white background. I ended up much preferring to use a dark background, as I could more easily control the light.

There's a fair bit of post gone into the images, with the exception of Natalie's headshot above. Studio lights show up every imperfection so lots of cloning out spots and the like. The studio I was in also had a rough white painted stone backdrop which I ended up editing to a plain white background in some of the images. More post work than I enjoy, but it can be very satisfying!

Excellent work gents, I would have no idea where to start with lighting and a studio, I can barely use my flashgun.

On the other hand I was very pleased to get this shot this morning. I've seen Goldcrests in the garden quite frequently, but never even got a shot off before as they are so quick and secretive.

Its not perfect but I'm happy with it for now - getting one with a clean background is the next challenge.

Camera could have been pointing slightly lower, but I like the marmalade sky and the way that the rooftops in the foreground seem to loom in...and everything seems to be in focus and at the correct exposure, which is nice.

Spent an hour last weekend at the National Cycling Centre watching a couple of mates do a track taster session. Didn't get many decent shots due to a combination of poor skills, lack of practice with the camera recently, a horrendously cheap zoom lens and the fact that ISO 1600 on the 400D is pants. But mainly down to me. Anyway, here's one I quite like.
