My first attempt at both self portraiture and use of an off camera flash
Self portraits are always challenging and no one will ever appreciate the effort and experience of making them as much as the artist/photographer will.
FWIW I think you did a pretty good job here; never was your Flickr persona (Davetheblade) more fitting than the result here; you do look rather menacing 😀 The lighting does seem to have worked rather well and could almost pass as natural.
I'm finding that when it comes to using added light, there are two results that work well; either a look that is entirely natural or a look that is direct and obvious (think Nan Goldin). I am increasingly finding that the typical 'studio' look of something in between doesn't appeal to me.

Stepped way outside my comfort zone a few weeks ago and shot a band in a studio.
I'm normally found shooting bikes outside with natural light, so it was great fun playing around with huge studio lights

I haven't done any recreational photography for months. Either been working on my distillery, or shooting events.
However, picked up a drone last week for distillery promo work and finally got an SD card for it today. One of the first photos from it. Proud I didn't crash the thing!

The drone's a Phantom 3 Professional. Picture quality isn't that great from it, but it will at least shoot in RAW (DNG format), so photos can be somewhat rescued!
Took the dog a stroll to Durris Forest today - there's a stone circle there (in Clune Wood) I wanted to see.

BTW since the image will be a JPEG it will have been processed.
Considering it came off my phone during a walk at the woods with the kids and dogs whilst simultaneously messing around with Lightroom, I was quite pleased with how this came out.

I don't agree, I don't think hers is much better than yours. I actually prefer yours.
In truth thought this is a style of shooting that I'm not overly keen on but that's a personal preference. The examples on the page you link to though a utterly ghastly, over indulgent saccharine and HDRd to within an inch of their pixels. Your images still looks like it's real and I much prefer it.

They are certainly heavily processed. Some work better than others, though, and your statement could apply to many of the photos on this thread. In my opinion.

Fair enough.....I still prefer your image though 😀 but thuis must be the first time there was a disagreement online where one individual thought the other person was the better party and that party didn't agree with the assessment. 😯
