Can any of the keen photographers offer some advice?

I need to get some slides (transparencies) scanned to digital. in the short term I will see if any of the local photos shoips offer this service - but longer term it would probably be worth my while to buy a transparency scanner.

Can anyone offer any guidance as to what models are worth looking at and what budget I should be thinking about?

Not talking about profesional level gear - but woud like the scanned images to be reasonable quality

Most decent flatbed scanners will have a transparency adaptor available - some include it when you buy them, some have one as an optional extra.

My dad has scanned several thousand slides that he took in the 70s and 80s. Using (I think) an Epson V750 flatbed scanner and the results have been excellent. Google Epson scanner transparency for more details of their products.

Our scanner is pretty old, and I'm not confident that it would be much good.

Anyone have any experience with the specific negative / slide scanners?

Dedicated slide scanner will give you better quality results than a flatbed, but of course is less flexible. Have a look in Jessops.

I own a Minolta Dimage 5400 scanner; it was expensive, but is very good. Ebay might throw up a bargain.

Film scanners will often come with dust removal software, which, believe me, can be a Godsend for slides that haven't been stored in optimum conditions.
