By a long, dull and convoluted story there is a chance that I could move to Penicuik when the world returns to something resembling normal.

Would make great financial sense, but having visited over the years I have reservations...

Does the STW massive have any insight?

It's alright. I grew up there. The town centre is nothing to write home about which is a shame. There are a lot of trails around Midlothian away from the Pentlands.

They're building all along top from Mauricewood to Lowrie's Den.

Which part are you planning on moving too?

Like everywhere it has its ups and downs.

The hum? No idea what that is.

Part: Peebles end of it.

No kids or associated worries. Would mostly WFH.

If you need to get into Edinburgh everyday, checkout how long the bus takes. Cycling could be quicker. Nice routes for walking / biking / running from the door.

I live in Roslin, just moved from Auchendinny. PM me for details if you like. You could do a lot worse!

If you’re mainly WFH. Why not moved a bit further towards Peebles, say just far enough to actually be in Peebles!?

I looked at Penicuik a few years ago. The only thing it had that appealed to me was access to the Pentlands, although it had a hard ask getting me to part company with living on the coast.

The bus journey times are a bit of a chore tbh, much longer than I expected for the distance.

Atiredman, I'm sure there'd be no problems that end of town. L

Grew up there, been away for a while now. As above access to Pentlands was good, and Peebles not too far, house prices have been pretty stagnant I think for last decade as my old place was still recently priced lower than I sold it for, might be the same in many places. They killed the High Street when they pedestrianized it, forward thinking at the time, but not the demand to keep it busy, then Tesco opened the other end of town. Got tired of the pub culture, getting pissed all the time, but that could have just been me getting older. If I was WFH, there must be nicer places.

Not getting the in-jokes re hums and Pantera 🤷‍♂️

Appreciate the input otherwise. Sounds like it might be viable for a couple of years.

The Pantera thing is not an in joke or anything, just a statement of fact.
Consider opening a checked-shirt store called A Vulgar Display of Flannel and you'll make a mint

It's 20 minutes from Glentress. What's not to like.

It's Ok actually, some pretty nice areas.

It has a Belgian Consulate with all the trappings (flag, large ornate shield) There must be a story there.

The guy that owns the travel company in Penicuik is an honorary Belgian Consul, hence the Consulate. It's not a full Consulate though.

Lived there for nearly 3 years. Great to be able to run into the Pentlands from the door. Commute by bike to the centre of Edinburgh in under 50 mins mostly off road or on minor roads (from Valleyfield, so down the North Esk).
The town centre is not the most fantastic, but there are a couple of ok pubs for food and a pint (Navaar and Haigs).
As you have probably noticed it's not too far from Peebles.
Lovely walks round the Penicuik House estate and other local spots.

Thanks everyone - sounds like it would be a viable option, depending on how the world recovers from the coronavirus situation.

I've spent some time there, but not contemplated living there before...
