What kind of food do they sell around Paddington Station as I bought some chicken and rice from a little deli last friday - Is it middle eastern cuisine?

Whilst I have your attention whats the Ally Pally area like? Blacks, Whites, Oriental, Asian - Cheap, Expensive - leafy, murky?

I had to think about that for a moment, Captain Flashheart! 😆

Around Paddington, I think there's quite an Arabic influence; further up towards Notting Hill it can be quite mixed though; West Indian, Spanish etc.

Not familiar with Alexandra Palace area, but it looks quite leafy. I imagine it might be quite 'posh'.

Alexander Palace - just westish is Muswell Hill, then East Finchley- solid middle class. Southish are Hornsey and Crouch End - bit err hipper, younger, mpre bars etc til you get to Finsbury Park. East are the badlands of Wood Green and Turnpike Lane. Chavsville. North is, well suburbia, I think.

If you're looking for somewhere to live, my pick would be Hornsey or Crouch End - full of mac owners and graphic artists. Transport is a bit hit and miss around the area though. Muswell Hill, Ally Pally, Crouch End, Hornsey are all overground, but Finsbury Park underground is just a bus ride/walk away.

Bit of everything round Paddington. Including whatever made kept me up all last Thursday night spewing and shitting like a bipolar fire hydrant.

Sounds nasty, 'Mr Greedy'! 😮

Muswell Hill etc are very very expensive, though. Some lovely houses, but rents are crazy. I have a friend who lives there; apparently everyone round there is 'very Middle Class'. Wood Green/Hornsey will be a good bit cheaper, and a good bit 'rougher', but possibly more 'lively'.

Paddington has that strange mix of uber-rich and quite poor. I think a lot of housing round there will be pretty expensive mind, certainly towards Hyde Park. Mind you, I don't think anywhere in London is what you might call 'cheap'.

Wood Green / Turnpike Lane aren't that bad. A few friends have bought places there over the years as it's better vfm and they could afford 3 bed houses instead of 2 bed flats.

Crouch End is nice, but you're relying on buses all the time to get you to tube stations and they can get really busy at peak times.

I live in Stroud Green which is kind of between Finsbury Park and Crouch End. Close enough to FP station for overground or choice of two tube lines. If you're near Stroud Green Road then you get a choice of 3 buses to/from the station so never have to wait more than a couple of mins or else it's under 10 mins walk. Alexandra Palace itself is one bus away, maybe 15 mins or so. Good primary schools but not so good for secondary - those who can afford it seem to migrate to Muswell Hill when their kids get older.

I lived in Muswell Hill for four years before moving back to Edinburgh . I can honestly say i dont miss London but do miss Muswell Hill. The place was like Stella streetwith wall to wall tv celebs from Spandau Ballet to phil Mitchell. It is very pricey though but is surrounded by Highgate woods one side and is link by a track to Ally Pally. If its out your price search slightly north to Friern Barnet , east Barnet or even East Finchley. If you are up in "Muzza" as the middle class bohemians like to call it try toffs chip shop on the Broadway.

Yeah, mac owners and graphic artists in crouch end. **wretch**. i lived for a long while on the haringey ladder, just next to alexandra palace. Yes, it's a bit rough, but it's special. Probably my favourite place in the world, and i've been around a bit - lived all over london, america, italy, eastern europe... Green lanes is my favourite street. Beautiful turkish food all night, great pub, illegal gambling, shops full of weird crap, people on the street at all hours. And even the architecture of that place makes me feel really in a city. It smells good too, all that food cooking. The canal which runs from the train station along the park with the palace is full of giant fish, and between the train tracks and the water there are the biggest and most delicious blackberries ever, that you can just grab handfuls of. Incredible place. Did i mention it was cheap? Lots of turks, albanians, polaks, blacks, really diverse. I love that, but but my wife didn't feel safe. For example there was a group of hoodies which used to hang out at the end of our street. Alright kids if you bother to stop to have a chat, but of course she never did... Of course there used to be a stabbing once and again, but that was just internal conflicts, not random or robbery or anyhing. i would love to live there again, regardless

Strange as it's the one place in London my girlfriend felt safest. we used to live on the ladder closer to the Manor House end and up the hill a bit. Nice and quiet. Now we're in Walthamstow, i think i'm doomed to stay in the north east bit until I work up the courage to move to cornwall.

Hammo -- That's great! I suppose the feeling of safety is relative to the other places you've lived, and we've lived in some boring-ass spots... I'm jealous.

I kinda liked the areas North of Archway, never found it boring. Even slightly East of there was rather fine.
Ally Pally - one of the real jewels of London, just as Muswell Hill and Archway are.
You'll love it if you can afford to live rather than survive there.
I'd go back even tomorrow if money wasn't a problem.

It would more depend on if a job came in than me fancying a move plus i like this view scroll down for panorama strangely i thought it would be cheap due to the crap transport links which being a cyclist means little to me.

I probably should have added to my post that I was forced into cycling to work as was skint and did Musswell Hill to Kings Cross daily and not being a cyclist hated it at first then got the bug and was transferred to Kilburn which was a cracking cycle from Muzza through Highgate and Hampstead to Kilburn amd Paddington is only a few more miles away if thats where your job is..

The first year of my degree I had house share in Turnpike Lane, moved to Poplar but really didn't like it (one big council estate) so moved back. It is relative fo sho!

Hammo - if you're seriously considering a move to Cornwall, get in touch (e-mail in profile) - me and the wife lived down there for a couple of years, I could perhaps give you some tips (!).
