Jones probably hasn’t kicked on the way Klopp would have hoped and given his potential. Origi is poor but scores massively important goals now and then and Elliot had that bad injury. Gomez is fourth choice centre back and a willing but limited back up for Trent.

Thiago was good today. Be nice if he can stay fit for more than three or four games. Konate as well, rough diamond I think and how good are he and Liverpool from set pieces? United game - form goes out the window and United actually have a sniff of the top four now. Will be close.

Thiago is an interesting one. He was the major driving force during Bayern's very successful period and then signed for Liverpool. I was convinced he was crocked. Seems he may not quite be In the same way as Andriy Shevchenko or Paulo Futre were.

There is no doubt about the quality of Thiago, my only concern is he has a mistake in him

He's got a long way to go to even come close to Maguire!

When it comes to potential for an absolute howler, there’s simply nobody in the same league as Harry Maguire

He’s got to rank as the worst signing United have ever made and is probably up there as the most ludicrous transfer fee in football history

I hope to Christ he’s not still here next season. Unfortunately, it looks like we’re saddled with him, because who the hell would want him?

Having said that, that applies to most of our present squad. Today was absolutely pitiful yet again. Scraping a win against the team at the bottom with De Gea and Ronnie the only two who bothered to turn up. Defensively, we’re an absolute shambles!

So what's your take on Ronaldo. Possibly the best footballer to ever play for Manchester United? But maybe not the best Manchester United player ever. I think there's a difference.
For Reading possibly our greatest player was Robin Friday but out our best (that I saw) was Richie Bowman.

I know what you mean. It’s well put, that.Ronnie ended up at Old Trafford before and after his best years. But even at his age he’s still capable of putting a performance in like that yesterday. Good job he did, as nobody else seemed interested.

As for our best ever player, I think you can tell someone’s age from their answer to that. For me, there’s no contest. Oh, for even a fraction of this type of leadership on the pitch nowadays…

He was the catalyst for all the trophies that followed

Simon Osborn for me, only tempered by the fact that he didn't see the glory days in the premiership. He oozed class.

Or Glen Little. For a bloke that couldn't run and only had one foot. Or maybe Jimmy Kebe, or Jimmy Quinn. Sidwell was class too. Gylfi was decent as well (but we don't talk about him now). As a goalkeeper Shaka was amazing, as was Ali al-Habsi, and Marcus H.

But for sheer pulse raising whenever he got the ball (even though it was just as likely to end up in Wantage Road) a midweek evening after school watching Gilkesy at the old Elm Park......

Surely Bobby Charlton for Man Utd. No better tribute than

"The best player I ever saw was Sir Bobby – and he's my brother.

An absolute legend, no doubt, but like I said Jon, I think you can tell someone’s age from the answer to that question.

Football is all about the romance, isn’t it, after all?

That era for me is about pre-kids, pre-Glazers, when Saturday afternoons were about meeting the lads for a couple of pints in the Quad then wandering up to Old Trafford and watching this amazing enigmatic French bloke being brilliant and transforming the clubs fortunes through his sheer desire to win, and no little amount of skill. We all idolised Eric. Still do. It’s a bit cliched to describe someone as a ‘talisman’ but if the crown fits…

We could have a game here. Tell us your clubs best player and the rest of us can guess your age 😃

I have to apologise for not really knowing enough about Reading to comment, but my mates dad is a big fan (now exiled in the North) and I remember watching the play off final in the pub with him (against Huddersfield) which stood out as being one of the worst games of football I’ve ever witnessed.

Our collective comment, as they lined up for penalties was ‘well whichever one of these two end up being promoted, they’ll be going straight back down’. Sorry

That was an awful game. Shame because we've been in some classic playoff finals (which we always lose by the odd goal in many) 4-3 to Bolton; Swansea 4-2 (I know not odd goal but that was a late dodgy pen after we'd been 3-0 down at halftime, back to 3-2 and then hit the post and Swansea were in tatters)

Robin Friday - The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw is a good read for any football fan.

Not the best ever, but night-and-day the best at that time.

Is that Kinkladze, was always a rumour he was going to join us, never did, was a running joke in the late 90s early 00s.

Best player our club had (in my time), has to be Larsson, watched him go from being a bit of a mare to a legend in a few years when i had my season ticket.

I’ve got one of his Wolves shirts hanging in the wardrobe. Great player in a very mediocre team.

You think City supporters miss the days in the 90s when Swales and then Lee were the chairmen instead of these weird owners with actual funds took over ;o)

A biggee tonight.

I'm confident of an easy 3 points with Harry Maguire giving Van Dijk a defending masterclass and a hatrick for Marcus Rashford who's been banging them in for fun of late

Oh hang on a minute... sorry... I've spent this afternoon smoking crack

If we can keep it down to single figures, I'll be amazed

I think it comes down to whether matic or mctominay partner Fred 😁

It’s a weird one tonight, they say form goes out the window in games like this, but Liverpool have been focused all year, think ragnick will have his work cut out this evening!

Good news, Phil Jones is back in to shore up the defence!

Matic and Pogba is the central midfield pairing as well, interesting to see how this works

5 at the back, parking the bus I think and trying to hit on the break with Rashford and Elanga’s pace.

Jones actually did ok the last time he played!

I’m sure that having played about half an hours football in the last three seasons he’ll have no problem at all dealing with Mane, Salah and Diaz, especially with a defensive stalwart like Maguire alongside him

I’m not sure I can bear to watch this.

I’m only allowed one Scouser in the house, but I may have to evict him before half time

The way united are playing, they will be lucky if Liverpool don't get into double figures tonight.

There was a hint of offside about the goal though, would have liked to see the lines drawn.

That was a good goal there, if the heads go down this could get up to 4 or 5 i think, unless Liverpool back off, but they have 3 more forwards on the bench desperate for minutes and goals!

If Ten Hag is watching this excuse of a team I think he'll be having second thoughts about leaving Ajax.

after the City fans showed a distinct lack of class over Hillsborough at the weekend, that was top notch by the Anfield choir on 7 minutes. My car must have briefly passed through a dust cloud.

Well this is going absolutely as expected. I could voice my opinions on this half-arsed bunch of *ing lazy, useless *s, none of whom are fit to wear the ****ing shirt*, but the swear filter would explode

I’ll just leave it to Roy Keane to express my thoughts for me

* the usual solitary De Gea exception applies

Only noticed Fernandes was playing in that last 5 minutes, it's not a great showing so far in terms of effort from ManU

It’s like a training match. United haven’t had a shot yet! Their only hope is Liverpool over confidence.

Tbf, Liverpool dismantled city as easily, they are hitting top top form at the right point in the season.
Eek, we (spurs) are still to go to a field.

At least it's over now for you Binners, one question though, is that lad Hannibal part of the squad of a fan brought on for the last few minutes?!

Well in 90 minutes he was the only player in a United shirt who actually looked up for it.

Another truly shocking performance. If you can’t be arsed to put a shift in at Anfield when you’re still (Somewhat unbelievably) chasing fourth then what the **** are you doing at the club?!

Because Utd aren’t a top 4 team. Teams in the bottom half of the table have put a better performance in against Liverpool in both the home and away fixtures.

Another 7th position for Utd. They won’t be anywhere near a trophy for at least 10 years.

There was nothing from Man U, not one player looked up for it. Whether you are in good form or not, surely that's a game you at least try to make a bit difficult even if winning is unlikely.

Getting a caretaker in has been the latest in a whole host of bad decisions. Rangnick has made them worse, if that’s possible. Some odd formations and selections and not helped by the players knowing he’s going at the end of the season.

Yeah, and i think a few players are being found out longer term, all game Rashford's first touch was terrible, his movement was poor and his shots were weak at best, great chance to make it 2-1 at the start of the second half, and from that moment it was all downhill. Is it just a loss of form with him, or just issues he's always had, but were hidden a bit during a good spell?

Fernandes showed he just struggles when the chips are down, and another usual nasty challenge that could have got him sent off and banned on another day, the full backs again are a real area of weakness, Dalot struggles against the bigger teams, Wan Bissaka is just a weird one, i think he has some talent and ability, but not as a roaming full back, and his confidence is just shot.

Same with a few others, Sancho looked good coming on at the start, but was so isolated at times without the ball, Elanga was never really in it, but those two are probably going to be part of any rebuild, same with De Gea if he stays!

It’s what happens when you have clueless owners who couldn’t give a toss what goes on in the pitch

He’s a supply teacher. What did they expect? Especially from bone idle narcissists like Pogba. * off that he was injured tonight! He knew what was coming and just couldn’t be arsed with it

We’ve shipped 9 goals against Liverpool in 2 games, without even looking like scoring in reply and absolutely nobody at the club, other than Sideshow Bob who came on for the last ten minutes today, looks even remotely bothered by that

That’s the culture throughout the club. Nobody gives a shit as long as the shareholders are getting their dividends

We’ll not have a sniff at winning anything while these *s own the club.

I can’t see how they even begin to change things because nobody at the club seems remotely interested in doing so. As long as the gravy train keeps rolling

It’s utterly depressing having to sit through pitiful shite like tonight

That’s pretty bang on. Even through the 90s and 2000s when United were dominant Liverpool still got up for games v United.

Maybe we’re not giving Liverpool and especially Klopp enough credit though. Who’d have lived with them last night? Not many. What a difference having a fully fit squad makes compared to last season.
