You can't use that, it's art.

Can't believe people bothered to argue with Elfin's nonsense on there. If I didn't know the fella, I would've said he was trolling with that crap! (no offence, loik)

What was the tower hamlets defence then?

a general toys out of the pram flouncing, with a side order of faux indignation, with the intention of making a straight pwnage look like a personal attack.

No point in continuing discussing owt with someone who is rude. See ya.

= the tower hamlets defence... as mentioned above, only to be used when being completely whipped in an argument.

😆 I've only read the last page but that does seem to sum it up well.

Personally, I thought it a success - I managed to get Fred to exchange views with me without any recourse to "street" grammar or insults (I had to work hard for it, though). He even agreed with me at one point!

A Great Leap Forward. 🙂

Went downhill a bit after that, mind.

I think it was an all time STW classic and I was happy to participate in it. I was of the opinion, in the end, that had the argument gone the other way, Elfin could have and would have argued for Emin rather than against her work as an artist.

Are you suggesting that Fred just likes arguing for the sake of it and doesn't really mean what he says?

No.

Is that not the very definition of "trolling"? If so, then I take back what I said above!

Sniff.. wipe..
Ewe, that was a wet one..

I thought it a highly amusing and thought provoking thread. Ok, so the last page or so entered into a virtual boxing ring, but you kept your corners well defended didn't ya's.. I mean no one pulled hair or bit the others ear.. just general elbows out stuff and puffing of cheeks.. no harm done.
An interesting divergence from the norm though. Some highly intelligent folks with inspiring thought provoking ideas and beliefs and outlook.
Enjoyed it thoroughly.
Here’s hoping we have more debates like that one.

Sniff..

Nah, it's ok I'll get over it..

And I've thrown away all the wet kleenex now ta.

I disagree i think he really does think she is a [laregly] talentless oaf with a penchant for self promotion nd self absorption.
IIRC she rated her looks a 10 out of 10 so I think her judgement/eyesight is pish as well but her arrogance means she should be a poster on here.

Sorry DezB - missed your post. I tend to agree with you which is a shame because under the bluster I do think Elfin is intelligent and can carry an argument but tends to side with confrontation for the sake of it just like certain other forum members sometimes.

Walkers crisps should be interested in sponsoring elf, the chip he carries round on his shoulder must be worth a fortune to them

Whats elfin like in "real life"? As much of a pain in the arse? Will he have a stand up argument based on his facts about who's round it is, in the next pub? 😀

I'd have a beer with Elfin and have told him so in the past and he has also gone off forum to chat with me about some more personal recent events in my life so I know his heart really is in the right place - I have nothing against him whatsoever.

It was about the rampant and increasingly compulsory nepotism in art.. and the ensuing confusion it causes when trying to untangle the wheat from the resultant chaff.. with particular reference to attempting to understand the more conceptual stuff amid the chaos.. 😉

So was it basically that not everyone likes the same stuff?

I was concerned that people were being dismissive without necessarily fully understanding what they were dismissing.. my ultimate point was that you can slag stuff off but you have to be able to back it up with WHY it's crap.

Re Elf - I like him, he's a good chap and the world needs interesting people. You can disagree with people sometimes and remain amicable 🙂

the concept of the tower hamlets defence has now been born though, so some good came out of it.

See, it was your (and others) arrogance and snobbishness which I challenged, and none of you actually made any good argument for your own views, other than to suggest anyone who does not in any way understand emin's work is think or ignorant or uneducated. Trying to appear all lofty and superior, without any actual foundation for your sneering condescending attitudes.

As for 'pwnage'; go back and read through the thread.

And tell me how many examples of Emin's work were used to illustrate your arguments.

Oh, hang on, I don't see any. All I saw was a load of elitist waffle about people just not 'understanding' Emin's work. With the suggestion that those of you who do, are somehow superior to those who don't.

And then, right, when some of youse knew you'd lost the argument, you resorted to picking up on certain personal aspects of my life, such as my background, where I live etc. Why is that relevant? Where did I refer to anyone else's personal life?

DrJ I think it was referred to me as a 'barrow boy'. Is your imagination so limited that you need to resort to using outdated cultural stereotypes to have a personal swipe at someone? Pretty pathetic; just shows you've got nowt intelligent left to say.

I have no problem arguing any topic with anyone; just leave out the personal stuff.

the chip he carries round on his shoulder

What chip's that then? Care to explain?

Pathetic.

Love the way folk who've never met me make their minds up about me based on a load of nonsense on an internet forum. Shows just how ignorant and narrow-minded they are. Wallies.

And at the end of the day, you all know I'm right anyway. 😉

X

Whats elfin like in "real life"?

Honestly? I can count the number of folk I genuinely trust to do the right thing on both hands. He, despite his argumentative nature, is amongst them. And that list includes my family and friends.

As much of a pain in the arse?

Yes.

Will he have a stand up argument based on his facts about who's round it is, in the next pub?

No. He has little wealth, but would gladly give it to his mates.

He is a very, very good friend.

It was about the rampant and increasingly compulsory nepotism in art

That's an interesting point of the debate that i hadn't picked up on, largely because I think that my whole point in the debate lay outside of the general polemic.

However, if we're allowed to carry on the debate without anyone Tower Hamletting and getting the thread closed down, could I suggest that virtually the entire canon of art, certainly up to the modern era, has been shaped by nepotism. Very little survives other than cave paintings of works of art by those not favoured by court or religious patronage. In fact there's probably an argument to suggest that art is less prone to nepotism now than it ever was. Any one can put any art in any media onto the internet now and enjoy an audience surely ?

And anyway enough bickering, back to art.

Where is this Barbara Hepworth sculpture? No cheating now, Google takes the fun out of it.
