Aye, that's pure conspiracy theory. But there are more serious articles discussing it.

On the subject of large untapped oil reserves in the Firth of Clyde and the west in general, and that these were covered up due to Faslane and Trident. What I don't understand is that if there is so much potential why hasn't the Government moved Trident elsewhere and opened up the area to the oil companies.

Folk down south would welcome the new jobs Trident would bring, people in West of Scotland would be glad to be rid of Trident and revel in the job boom the oil would bring. The cost of one would be paid by the windfall of the other.

It would be such a vote winner I can't believe that if there was that much potential it wouldn't have already been done. Unless I am missing something?

The problem is that there really isn't anywhere else Trident can sensibly go in the UK. Milford Haven would have been good, but they built a big oil terminal there instead.

well, if you can't believe Ben's part-trained geologist friend on Facebook's friend's mum's assessment of oil reserves in the North Sea, who can you believe?

(a publicly-traded company that failed to disclose a major new proven discovery like that would be in serious trouble inc potentially personal liability for the directors).

That's what I thought, but on donning my tinfoil hat, I realised that a perfect excuse would be if they were told to keep it quiet until after the referendum for "security" reasons by the PM of the UK.

Companies keep commercial secrets all the time - in fact company employees and directors can get in serious trouble for divulging secrets. One can imagine a scenario where a discovery is kept secret in return for better tax rates or other benefits.

Ben - it's not really up for tinfoil-shielded Facebook debates. Disclosure obligations for resources companies are a massive legal issue.

I notice also there is no identification of the company purportedly involved or why they would GAF about David Cameron's interests.

it is silly to discuss this third hand internet bollocks.

And Norfolk, for a good while we too found ourselves on the disposable list.

At the hands of an overbearing foreign power no less.

I'd imagine Aldermarston is something of a target too.

Although to be fair, is somebody nukes Faslane. We are all ****ed anyway.

Epicyclo, thanks but I'd already seen those. I think most are aware that there's decent reserves west of Shetland. I run (when he's about) with a friend involved in the development of the facilities on Shetland in perpetration for it.

What I'm actually after is a none pro yes corroboration of the story as provided by Ben/facebook. A rigger with the balls to stand up for their principles and country would go a long way on this matter. People pay a lot higher price than getting fired for their countries.

So the most able politician in the UK (sic) goes head to head with a man last known for standing like a rabbit in the headlights in the middle of the financial crisis. So how much of a car crash? Will the DO stick to his Starkey/Farrage/galloway-esque persona that has endeared him so much to women and the young voters! Or will he re-invent himself as a statesman capable of giving at least one straight answer?

Oh, for one piece of honesty and sensible debate about the core issues. Has the fiscal commission kept a rabbit up its sleeve to pull out a plan D? Or will the DO persist with his bluff and bluster (funny how those words slip so easily of his tongue. If all else fails he become a troll and play on the internet).

BS bingo cards at the ready.....

Ah, classic THM impartial commentary.

I guess what I'm most interested in is if a) Salmond (and the questions) focus on the referendum itself and the SNP's plan for how the settlement etc will work rather than what future SNP policy will be, and b) Will Darling give any sort of vision for Scotland going forward in the union rather than just shooting down everything that Salmond says as impossible or unrealistic.

Piemonster I hope you are going to give us some sort of guidance to the scoring on the Piemonster Disappointment Scale.
Some examples:-
Did it rain on your wedding day? If so what score did you give on the PDS?
You have spent a fortune on a new bike including 650b wheels ,it makes the trails seem less alive than your old bike. What is the PDS score?
It is lunchtime and after waiting in a long queue you discover there are no pies left in Greggs. What is the PDS score?

Oh, for one piece of honesty and sensible debate about the core issues

How can you write that introduction and then do an appeal for this?
Again you are guilty of doing the very thing you object to yet again.

BS bingo cards at the ready...

For your posts?

Ah, classic THM impartial commentary.

Nobody tell Binners this, but... Id consider a pie purchasing fail at Greggs as a win.

Hmm driving to Lochinver to find the Pies By Post Lochinver Larder cafe closed, that would be a better comparable.

Well, I've had the misfortune to read the 'articles' about the oil tests WOS and what a pile of dangerous and misleading pap. Here's hoping for a good debate tonight but fearing it'll be the usual rubbish.

Propaganda, nowt new. And being produced by both sides.

Although I'm not actually 100% which side is responsible for the latest oil one.

This TV debate must be about the least watchable programme on TV for quite some time.

I see the three UK parties have signed a pledge to allow Scotland to set their own taxes if they remain within the UK. This is genuis as it pins AS into a corner just ahead of the debate. Truth is for AS to deliver on his promises he needs to put taxes up so now he has the freedom to do so after a no vote too.

Ah, classic THM impartial commentary.

I have never made any pretence in impartiality where the DO is concerned. He is potentially leading Scotland and rUK down a negative path based on deceit and lies. When he steps into the big boys playground and is immediately exposed for what he is, then he hides behind the classic paper shields of crying bully - exactly the behaviour he portrays in his little pool. (Not) funny that.

I don't think the debate is streamed in the rUK - so spared the detail. But the result will be interesting. By claiming that Darling has the heebie jeebies already, the DO has set the benchmark against which he must be judged. Anything other than an obliteration must be seen as a failure on his part.

Cue prep from Nigel Farrage....

Edit, jambalaya it doesn't take much to pin the DO in the corner, but beware the cornered animal - he will have some stunt to pull.

What do you think is the core issue thm?

He could start by outlining a case for independence. So far he has avoided this completely. Why is the leader of this whole movement scared to commit to independence and all it involves? The answer is obvious.....

This seems like rehashed old news to me, there is no detail in the statement from the three scottish leaders, and the final decision will be made by the uk leadership of whichever party wins next year. Each party is putting forward it's own proposal so we do not know what we would be getting. Finally the per centage of spending that would be put under Holyrood control remains very small under all of the proposals,so really it is nothing more than window dressing.

On the contrary Thm the core issue is clearly expressed in the referendum question.
"Should Scotland should be an independent country?"

Indeed that is the question - we await the answer?

Nothing so far. Both sides have explained why they think that is a bad idea. Two separate arguments, with the same conclusion. If you can't answer you own question then it be ones little more than a vanity project, and an expensive one at that.

Well feel free to point me in the direction of a genuine case being made for independence and I will run all the way back through the long jump pit! In the meantime, we continue to await Godot, with I fear, the same result.

THM, it's tricky when your definition of independence seems to be different to everyone else's. Excuse me for paraphrasing here, but you seem to believe that if a country has treaties and unions and obligations with other countries, it's not independent.

We've had this several times - I've previously given you genuine reasons for wanting independence (for example getting rid of the nukes).
