Ortlieb stuff is normally great.  It's built tough, long warranty and they sell loads of spare parts.

That includes the Velocity backpack.  But the back panel padding is just foam that's stuck on.  This has probably been used about once a week for 2 1/2 years and it's tearing off.  Not repairable and not covered by warranty.

Have you asked Ortlieb about a good will repair or advice on effective repair?

I haven't bought much ortleib stuff because my wife does and it seems to disintegrate impressively quickly. I love the ethos, but the products seem flimsy (maybe I'm just hard on bags!).

Not repairable

That seems very surprising. Surely you could  scrape that one on and glue a new one on

The response from Ortlieb was 'not warranty, not possible to fix'.  I did go to them before here.

from their website -

"ORTLIEB products stand for durability and repairability. The Velocity is manufactured in our factory in Heilsbronn, Germany. We source materials locally, regionally, or internationally depending on what meets our high standards. We invest time in development to ensure the functionality of every detail.

Thanks to long-lasting materials, the bag is a reliable companion. Its lifespan puts the purchase price into perspective, especially since we offer a five-year warranty on our products. A wide range of repair and upgrade options further improves the price-performance ratio.

Repair before replacement: Every product is designed to be easy to repair and can, in most cases, be serviced by our Customer Service team in Heilsbronn. This extends its lifespan and conserves resources."

What did they say when you quoted their website to them?

Sounds very much like they need to be replacing it if it's not repairable.

It's a bit pants after roughly 150 uses.

I reckon I could repair that with aquasure glue and some masking tape to keep the glue neat. Pack the bag out so it's tight and the back is flat, maybe a piece of board inside. Mask out the section to glue, apply the glue then hold everything together with something flat and a wee bit of pressure. Alternatively use a bit of making tape to hold everything in position until the aquasure cures

i reckon that’s a top end estimate of use as well. Good suggestion though. Issue is how to stop it happening again. Just seems like a crap solution to back padding. I’ve never had any other pack that’s worn this badly in this area.

I have an ortlieb commuter daypack rucksack which has similar padding and I saw similar issues with some of it peeling off, although mine was the outer ends of the horizontal strips not the lower pads and after a good amount of (ab)use. I will say that after the first bits peeled it's now stopped and isn't getting any worse so maybe let it go and see?

The bits that have one on mine are the hard edges that caught on things, now the end few cm of each strip is sort of chamfered off maybe it doesn't catch so much. Who knows.

And for balance I've found the actual bag part of ortlieb products to be solid. I've slid my back rollers along tarmac a good few times and they're showing some minor scuff marks.

Of course just because Orlieb Back Rollers are indestructable - mine are from 2008 - doesn;t mean all of their other gear is as well designed and durable.

that's true, but i've had various other products that have been really good as well (brompton bags, saddle packs)
