So after 30 years of paying in, my old endowment should come out in a couple of months and would action cover the original mortgage - long since paid off.

Any suggestions of the best place to put keep it? Would like a bit of interest but also easy access - being lined up to be used on various house renovations etc so need to be able to access chunks of it over the next couple of years.

Thanks

Premium bonds - reinvest small prizes. You'll win £25 or £50 most months IME, sometimes more, sometimes nowt but averages out as good as any other savings right now. Plus you have the chance of a big prize with much better (though still not great) odds than the lotto. You can cash them in at any time.

Do you need to preserve the £30k or willing to take any risk?

Are you looking to at least protect against inflation or happy to get back £30k in 2 years time?

Option 1: Powder based derivatives.

Option 2: Curved implement futures.

Anything else is madness!

Certainly a far less risky proposition than the stock market right now! 😂

Marcus from Goldman Sachs will give you 1.3%, easy access.

Premium Bonds is equivalent to 1.3% interest. But there's a chance of getting nothing. Or a chance of getting a big prize.

I know you want easy access, and this is the opposite of that (unless you are approaching 55) ...but it will be far, far more tax efficient if you can put it into a pension to offset income tax.

We have a similar amount that was freed up recently and intended for a house move. As the house move is delayed until this passes, is it worth moving it in to premium bonds for 1-4 months, or is the transfer admin too lengthy to make it worthwhile?

Not quite close enough to 55 yet for the pension option.

Basically need to be taking £5k out of it every 4-5 months to get jobs done, so might try and persuade MrsMC to use the Premium Bonds suggestion.

Air cooled Porsche.

An elderly neighbour of ours did just this, spent 30k on one of the last air cooled whale tail 911's and it's also a factory "wide" version in about 2012/13. It was in VGC, it's been through an official Porsche restoration for bits and bobs (son worked at a main dealer), it's now worth closer to 100k.

Also a worthy candidate though!

I am looking into investing some of it into a diamond shaped object in titanium though.....

Keep hold of it under the mattress. Once the lockdown is lifted the stagflation that hits us will be incredible. You may be able to afford to feed your family for a month on that.

I'm only slightly joking.

Need to have Premium Bonds for 1 calendar month before they count for the draw. So if you buy now, won't count till June. So not really worth it for a short time.

You've probably missed the boat with Gold, 30% or so in weeks.

If this is indeed the end of days for Capitalism then it still might be a good shout.

Easy access and safe though, you might as well open a savings account with any high street branch, it just might not keep pace with inflation.

What do you want from it ?
Are you happy for it to sit and grow, or do you want to use a little every month ?

If the former, stick it in a SIPP and leave it. Or a straight investment fund if 55 is too far away.

Fundsmith, Vanguard etc all have products that would suit.

I use Intelligent Money. If you join pistonheads forum, they will waive the 100k minimum.

But Shirley if you're on PH then £100k is no barrier at all? That's the Butler's Christmas Bonus.
