Does anyone else on here have the "FUN" of being a vms admin???
I think I would call myself an admin in the loosest term, as I am about to have a nervous breakdown with my system 😆 Bloody discs keep unmounting themselves for no reason grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Crikey, well I was a VMS Systems Manager for quite a few years, but haven't touched it since about 2002. Great OS, rock solid (most of the time). Not sure I'd know what the hell to do with one these days though.

I am considering hitting mine with a hammer 😆 It's been going mental! Lexical functions doing whatever they please, logical names coming and going as they please key mappings changing their mind. Since the thing got "updated" earlier this year I have had nowt but problems sodding contractors!!!!

We use it, along with oracle RDB.

I love them both.

Not.

Ah yes Lexical functions, I used to really enjoy writing handy DCL scripts. Sad but true.

Blimey, that takes me back, I used to work for DEC. Have to say I have a soft spot for VMS, proper clustering 😉

Jesus H christ. I thought we'd killed VMS. It's like foot and mouth, the best thing for it it a bolt in the head and burial in a large grave. Some parts of it will seep into the ground water and appear later on but hopefully it'll eventually die and be forgotten.

The guys who made that shit were crazy!

DEC was even crazier. I remember interviewing sys admins for a job. They were all complete and utter nutjobs. One guy even brought his plans for a new computer with him. They were written on scraps of lined paper that looked like he'd been pouring coffee over them and the basis for his brilliant plan was soldering multiple cpu's on top of each other so they shared the workload.

No intelligence in the chips. Just solder them all together, they'll work it out. He was the best guy we interviewed too.
