and no I'm not planning on wearing the goggles in Leeds...
1) what are my alternatives to Oakley goggles with persimmon lenses, cos they seem well recommended but a bit dear for a week's use...
2) where would Leeds locals recommend for a Thursday night piss up for 8 firemen down from Edinburgh? Aged thirty-five and upwards, not interested in cattle markets or two-for-one booze shops really.
Thank you STW for any wisdom you wish to dispense...
Speaking from experience, I would always go polarised and Smith. But I think Smith is a bit pricey too. So not much help, sorry.
I know nothing about Leeds. 🙂
well if it's this Thursday, ie the 9th, you could come & see my band (and 3 other bands) play live - for free at Carpe Diem, opposite Millennium Square:

If it's not this week, then check out the rest of the Leeds Gig guide
(I'm in The Wick Effect btw)
Oakley O-frames are only about £30 and are spot on
Splash out a bit more on the double lens O frame, still quite cheap and do the job very nicely.
Polarised + Snow = Unnecessary cost.
Get some basic Oakley Persimmon if you're only using them for low light, otherwise, get something like an Anon Helix (2 lenses, low light/bright light) for about £50.
For a piss up in Leeds suggest an Otley Road pub crawl in Headingley starting at the 3 Horseshoes in Far Headingley moving towards town taking in the Original Oak, Skyrack.
Can recommend a few great places to eat in Leeds (thai, steak and italian), but know little about bars.
As for goggles, Oakley everytime. Buy anything else and you'll regret it and end up buying Oakleys.
Adidas ID2 are awesome goggles. My preferred choice
For goggles try them on, I found most of the big names are too narrow for my face. Spy and Anon work for me.
Do you have goggles for biking? Check out what snow lenses are available to fit the frames you have...
Oh and I'd say some sort of mirrored lens.
Never been out in Leeds 🙁
I own anon oakley smith and electric goggles, preferring the anon helix ones, which came with a free bonus lens
Oh and I'd say some sort of mirrored lens.
Why?
The key here is the "base" lens, as in the internal side of things which affect the visible light range and your interpretation thereof.
I would agree with the Oakley recommendation, but would also consider a Smith Phenom or iO if looking elsewhere. Oakley VR28 of the snow Black Iridium are my choice as an all rounder. Fire Iridium for uber-bright late season glacier missions and Persimmon for a super steaming whiteout.
Most of red watch west Yorkshire fire service are out tomorrow so no bother you jock lot 😉 bars wise we normally start scarbourgh taps by the station and see how it goes, enjoy
thanks for all the replies so far, maybe see you stoating about Firestarter!
Go to the German Market at millenium square. Theres lots of nice beer and food on offer and 2 beer halls and you'll all be able to get in no bother.
If my recent experience is anything to go by it seems that bad/cheap fancy dress is de rigeur in Leeds for a night out. Sadly.
Alas I'm not out mate wife isn't well 🙁 enjoy your night tho
Oh and I'd say some sort of mirrored lens.Why?[\quote]
'Cos they look cool? 🙂
Actually, I thought it helped reduce glare for lighter tints.
I was given a pair of Dragon DX with mirrored lens 10 years ago, they're still going strong.
I bought a second pair of Dragon DX two years ago (limited edition Jack Daniel's model Ooooooh!), they came with a mirrored lens and an amber/flat light lens which has gone into my original pair.
They've never let me down including full seasons in Banff and St.Anton.
MussED - get yourself to the New Penny, they'll be leased to see 8 firemen in there 🙂
Whitelocks is a nice pint, but a bit of a squeeze.
Adelphi, Brewery Tap, North bar. you could do the otley run as described above, but you are 17 years too old for it really
Leeds pubs (if you like real ale):
Palace (near bus station)
Duck & Drake
North Bar
Scarborough Taps
Leeds Ales Tap Room (around corner from train station but can't remember the name)
Whitelocks
Old Victoria Hotel
Mr Foley's Ale house
The Grove
Is it Brewery Wharf your thinking of? Just round from the train station just opposite Evans Bike shop
Brewery Taps, Brewery Wharf is a place in Leeds.
Smoke Stack is a good bar in leeds, no draft though. I think Aporto is the best out of the Call Lane bars.
Queens Court for you boys....
Well can't quite remember where we got to on Thursday night, but Friday we ended up in Bierkellar german place. Cheesey as, but a brilliant night!
Thanks for all your help - still not decided on Goggles though...
Electric EG2's all the way
