With A level results out today and the kids soon off to Uni, I've been reminiscing. What was being played heavily down your SU Nelson Mandala building?

I can distinctly remember pretty mainstream stuff as Kinky Afro (obvs not as good as the WFL VC remix), Kennedy, There's No Other Way, Sheriff Fatman and oddly Paint it Black and The Whole of The Moon. Sorry for not embedding, perhaps someone can help.

The word "jukebox" came into use in the United States beginning in 1940, apparently derived from the familiar usage "juke joint", derived from the Gullah word "juke" or "joog", meaning disorderly, rowdy, or wicked.

In 1993 we had Oasis and Blur both play the little side venue in the Nelson Mandela bar, 2 weeks apart. Liam threw an Oasis shirt at my mate and he threw it back.
Kinda preferred the mega raves we had.

Remember Missive Attack Mezzonine featuring heavily in one of the 'student' pubs in our first year.

In our college the jukebox was shite. Finding three reasonable songs was a major challenge. I always put the same three on.

Sollsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel.
Changes by David Bowie.
Enter Sandman by Metallica.

🙂

On the duke box down your Student Union

I know Andy's in a spot of bother at the moment but I didn't realise he was on the pull down the student union bar too!

Any three songs that lasted a long while, so the extended version of Layla by Eric Clapton, the extended version of I Am The Resurrection by The Stone Roses and, likely, the long version of Bat Out Of Hell by Meatloaf.

That there was a 30 minute chunk o' music for when you need the cash for playing pool

My mate used to do this, to be thrifty and piss everyone else off.

Two of the songs were the long versions of Light My Fire and Sex Machine.

He didn't even like The Doors.

He is from Yorkshire.

Freebird on the video jukebox (eee, the technology!!) in the bar at St Mary's purely for the length.

Odd days; a song you weren't bothered about because you felt it was VFM, rather than one you liked but was 1/3 the length.

Interestingly the pronunciation of the word 'Duke' has slid from 'Dyok' to 'Juke' over the last 50 years or so they are synonyms now, but they haven't always been.

What was funny about the early video jukeboxes is it took them an age to cue up the video. If you put in your quids and made your selections as you walked away smugly proud of the cool beats you were about to drop - it would serve up a random dose of Dollar or Big Fun

Sorry about that. Can't beat a bit of Big Fun. Such wholesome lads. 🙂

I used to love it when jukeboxes had full CD albums, complete with all those awful self-indulgent dirges they had to put on to indulge the drummer who wrote it. Stick a few quid in as you're leaving, and cue up about 30 minutes of utterly terrible stuff.
